Cheap Camera For Collecting My Own Airliner Photos

Sat May 05, 2007 3:59 pm

I'm looking to purchase a camera that, among other things, I can use to take pictures of airliners when I'm passing through airports and stuff. I'm not looking and use for something that would take pictures that would get accepted into the database, just stuff to keep for myself and to illustrate trip reports. Of course, being a college student, the cheaper a camera I can get, the better, as long as it is still a decent camera. Any recommendations?

If you want "the cheaper a camera (you) can get" then you're probably looking at a point-n-shoot. Canon (Powershot A710) and Nikon (Coolpix S10) both make cameras around $300 USD that have long zooms which will allow you to catch aircraft in flight from a bit of distance. Check out for more info on those or other cameras.

If your budget is higher than what I suggested above, let us know as you might be able to get an entry level SLR.

That is what I would go with but you should take a look at some DSLR's (i.e. the D40) they have really come down in price (D40 with a lens is around 600)

That is what I would go with, opposed to the Nikon. I actually have 55 photos in the database, all taken with a Canon Powershot A610.

Here are some of my shots, to give you a preview of what a Powershot can put out:

Why not a bridge ? I have a Dimage Z10, but it's now out dated i think !!!

Have a look at these :

Olympus SP-550UZ or 510UZ.

Nikon Coolpix 8800.

Canon Power Shot S5 IS or S3 IS.

Sony DSC H7 or H9 or H5 or H2 or H1.
