Number Of Actuations On Canon Bodies

Sun May 13, 2007 2:51 am

I use both the Canon 300D and 30D camera bodies. Sometimes i notice photographers on here state how many actuations a camera has taken, often quoting numbers in the thousands. Am wondering how it is possible to access this information, is it held in the data within the camera? Thankyou.

The number of actuations are recorded on the memory card but this is unreliable since if you change the card the number will vary. Canon are able to read the exact number of actuations and this information is usually provided if your camera is serviced.

Exif viewer here: http://homepage.mac.com/aozer/EV/
extracts this info from EXIF data, just check any of the pics taken with your camera. At least for Nikon

I am not sure if it will support Canon and it runs on Mac - but there are plenty similar utilities for PC out there.

I believe the exact count of the actuations is only stored in the EXIF-file by the 1D models, not by the other models...

PS: I use a 300D and I have checked with an Exif-reader: there is nothing at these file-locations...

Walter

With the 300D, you can choose to either reset the "counter" (=file names) every time you use a new, empty memory card, or continuously number the files.

E.g., CRW_8644 is the 8644th actuation, however the 300D counter automatically starts at zero after CRW_9999 I think.

That's correct, Florian!

But that's only related to the file-numbering on the CF-card.

It seems, however, if you mix CF-cards with an existing file-numbering, without reformatting in other camera's and than back, the numbering system is not reliable anymore... (I haven't tried it myself, but it was a topic under discussion on the "scramble"-forum some weeks ago).

Walter

A friend of mine recently purchased a secondhand 30D and the shutter button failed. When it came back from repair they had not only replaced the shutter button but the complete shutter assembly with a note to say it had completed 66,000 shutter actuations.

cheers

I seem to recall reading the figure was 50,000 for a 300D and 100,000 for the 30D but I have also seen a figure of 200,000 for a 30D. You will know when it fails  Wink

Smile I guess I will. I guess this is not something covered under an extended warranty either?

It depends on who your warranty is with but in most cases I would expect it would be covered.

With Canon cameras our biggest problem is DUST on the sensor, especially if you have the Dyson pump 100-400 lens. Sad

It is a little bit off-topic, but I would not blame the lens... it is more about changing the lenses in an environment which is often not so clean...

My 20D came back from service last year with the total number of actuations written down, so I guess that service engineers can get access to this info. I wonder if the end user can access it somehow?

Canon only release this information to their service agents but they all appear to use it when a camera goes in for repair.
