EOS350D Err 99?

Sun May 13, 2007 10:09 pm

Hi,

I went out for some aircraft photography yesterday when I got the Err 99 on my display. After taking out the memory card it worked again but later the same thing happened again. I changed memory cards and lense and it worked again but it still happens. Is this a serious problem? When I take out the memory card and put it back in it works fine but has happened several times now.

Anyone who has had the same problem and how was it fixed? I hope it is not something serious as I will go to AMS next month and can't afford to fix it right now as it takes months to fix (we don't have a camera store here that can fix these cameras and it has to be send abroad)  Sad

Error 99 is usually down to lens communication failure, do you have another lens to try?

cheers

Hi, yes normally use my EF75-300mm 1:4.-5.6 lense which is about 6 years old. My newer lense (EF90-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 USM) I don't use much as the photos come out softer. So does this error have to do with my older lense? Is 6 years old for such a lense?

It could be, try using the newer lens to see if you still get error 99, also make sure the contacts are clean on the older lens.

cheers

Thanks for your tips Kevin. Have you had similar experiences if I may ask?

I presume the EF75-300 is a Canon lens?

Yes on a Sigma lens which needed a re-chip and on a Canon lens when the autofocus motor was on its way out.

Yes, my EF75-300 is a Canon lense. Why you ask?

If it was a Sigma they are reverse engineered and error 99 is a common problem with older Sigma lenses which are fixed by a re-chip. I am not sure of issues with the Canon but check for dirty contacts, and try shooting using manual focus to see if you can rule out the focus motor. I would also suggest a call to Canon and have your lens serial number to hand.

I was told by Canon Tech that error 99 is a communications problem and usually but not always down to the lens.

I hope this helps.

I too had a problem with a Sigma 100-300mm which was very old. I personally just replaced it with a £70 Tamron and even if the Sigma had been working, the Tamron still beats it!
