Silly EOS400D Issue: My Nose

Sun Jun 10, 2007 5:18 am

A couple of months ago I bought a Canon EOS400D and I am very pleased with it, although it obviously took some practice to get good results. I just have one problem I can't seem to be solving: my nose keeps accidentally pressing the four "arrow" buttons. As I usually shoot in P mode, this means I constantly have the wrong AF type, ISO number or WB. (Metering is more to the left and normally not affected).

Does anybody else have this problem or is my nose simply too big?

Just switch eyes.

I had the same problem, albeit with a different camera, and my nose isn't that big. It'll feel weird at first but it's the only thing you can do.

Or change your nose for a smaller one [just kidding].

Don't Canon sell eye piece extenders?

Yes they do.

I had the same problem and more often than not it was the ISO arrow that I was pressing, and it resulted in my settings quite often changing from 100 to 800 or more. The 30D solves this problem but thats a little way off.

Mine seems to have a taste for 1600, which is not good...

I laughed at first, but it's actually a valid point. I am left-handed and put the camera in front of my left eye. Most people are right-handed and would presumably put the camera in front of their right eye, which puts your nose conveniently alongside the rubber USB plug cover! However switching eyes is horrible, because my right eye is not nearly as good due to some odd disorder (improperly centered macula lutea for the ophthalmologists among you).

Or nose deflectors!

Yep... I've wasted around 1000 shots with over ISO 800 due to that.

Its silly not to notice it sooner but when you are time limited and need to snap as quickly as possible it makes it hard.

So, I recently bought an XTi too. I'm right handed and I do look through the viewfinder with my right eye. My nose (thankfully!) does not press any buttons but... it does leave big smudges on the top-left part of the LCD. It's getting really annoying as I have to clean the LCD every now and then!

Sounds good but people are left or right eye dominant and in practice your dominant eye will give the best composition of an image. I am right-handed but left eye dominant. Apparently that means that someone in my family was/is left handed. It's an interesting subject that most opticians are only too willing to explain  Smile

There in no easy answer to a problem like this Sad

cheers

Considering how soft a nose is those buttons must be very sensitive, I kan press my KM 5d so hard to my face that it embossed camera contour, but it won't push any buttons Big grin
The issue of a smudged LCD is irritating though as it get's even harder to see than it already is on a sunny day  Smile
