I'm just curious if anyone out there is shooting regularly with a Nikkor AF-S 300mm F4D lens? I currently have an AF-S 70-200 F2.8 VR lens, plus the AF-S 200-400mm F4 VR. However, lately I've run into situations where the 70-200 wasn't enough reach (and some of the shots were directly overhead, so putting my 1.7 TC II on wouldn't have helped image quality), but the 200-400 was too much reach (some military bases don't allow lenses longer than 300mm along the sidelines).
Since I've already spent a fortune on glass I can't really justify a 300mm F2.8, but the 300mm F4 is pretty reasonably priced. I also have the new AF-S 70-300mm VR, but it's not the sharpest lens at 300mm and I really only bought it as a lightweight travel lens.
So from your experience, how does the 300 F4 perform?
Thanks in advance,
PS: I searched the forum for "300mm F4" and only got one hit from back in the pre-D200 days. So more variety appreciated!
