Making A Personal Site For My Aviation Photos-help

Thu Jun 28, 2007 11:31 pm

Hi Guys:

So i love aviation photography its become like a passion for me over the last few years. Now i want to make my own personal website where i can showcase my photographs and make it presentable for other professional to view. Ofcourse a.net will always be my primary place to upload my pics, but like other photographers have their own websites like airteamimages, etc.

I wanted to ask you guys for suggestions on what all you would like to see on an aviation photographers website.

Further, i have already bought my webspace and domain name www.deaphenphotography.com and have created my current default page (as you will see if you go to the above link). But can anyone advise me on how to go about it further. I plan on using Microsoft frontpage to convert my page layout into html code which i can paste into my webspace controlpanel.

Any help you can think of would be great.

many warm regards
nitin

That's a pretty general question, maybe if you had more specific concerns it would be easier to help. Reminds me of a joke question we got on a high school exam: "Describe the world in general. Be brief and specific."

If you've already got a domain and a host, then your next two steps are to figure out what kind of visual design you want, and what information you want to include in the site. Then map out the information: how page links will flow, scope of information to keep on each page. Do a shoddy job of figuring out navigation now and you're in for a slow, painful makeover later (just look at my site and you'll see what I mean!). There's a navigation tool in Frontpage that will let you build your pages in a flow chart format. Use your own page names, ones that make sense to YOU, not the default "new page 1" stuff FP will create or you'll never find anything when you go back to rework pages.

Rather than using Frontpage, if your web host supports it I suggest you use one of the many free-to-download web picture galleries available. Coppermine is one of the best. See

Frontpage is a good starter. Easy to use and you can instantly see the results. Couple the front page of your website with Coppermine or something similar like Charles suggested is also a good idea.

One thing to remember.......keep it simple. Avoid flashy buttons and stuff like that. People want to see the images.

I'd love to get my own site up and running again but just don't have the time at the moment. Might have to to pay someone to do it for me  Smile

Regards

Gary
