Congrats Royal.  Smile

I knew you would be the first one with a photo of the 787 on a.net.

Now I'm waiting to se how long it takes for the photo to get on the front page of a.net.

Comm'on guys, Royal made the effort to be there and work hard to get the 1st shot online in very short time. I just checked other website, dosen't even have the 787 photo. All credit to Royal. I really appreciate his work, to show all of us the first dreamliner.

If I lived in Seattle I would've got the first shot too mate...  Wink Royal, you might want to change the info though because its certainly not a 787-831.

What about the guys out in the sunlight on the opposite side of the plane watching across the highway? I sure hope their priority uploads get the same kind of leeway.

I wouldn't hold the fact that Royal was able to get inside and thus had wireless internet at his disposal against him, but he clipped one of the engines... Sometimes I think we get so picky that it ruins the niceness of just having the shots.

That's a hell of a good picture considering the overall setup/lighting, and the very short time you had for editing/uploading.

IIR it wasnt Royal that uploaded the photo. It was sent via phone to Andrew Hunt. Blame him, not Royal for the info error.

Thanks for the kind words. Was tough to get a decent shot. 15,000 people will do that to you. The event was def. not photog friendly.

I got the customer code wrong, nobodys fault but mine. I have asked the editors to fix it.

flight deck mock-up.

After the rollout we went to the 787 Gallery for a private reception. This is where customers can pick colors, seats, fabrics, and fixtures for their planes, it is pretty cool, not like anything I have ever seen before.

OK, it's a new plane, but the shot is dark, not level and a lot of the plane is obscured.

Fragile ego? Maybe we should all relax a bit. I guess neither Royal nor Johan would deny that the picture is not matching a.net's usual standards. But then, the goal of this project was to show the first ever (not best ever) picture of a 787 on a.net. So I guess the primary target was achieved.

Looking at the other press fotos of that event, you will see they look as dark as Royal's. So unless all photographers at the event lost their skills at the same time, I guess it would be pretty safe to assume that the conditions were really lousy, and almost no one would have managed to get a better shot.

On a lighter note: all this will be perfect fuel to the tin-foil conspiracy that in fact there is no dreamliner, and this is all a big fake by Boeing... Big grin

Hi all

Image perfectly acceptable.

Quite a few uploaded already but unfortunately 2mp phone camera snaps not acceptable. After watching a bit of the launch video on the BBC this morning I wonder just how many of the crowd who were snapping away like mad, from a million feet away, will be uploading.

Well done Royal. A few weeks in the planning even if I was a week early

Regards

Gary

Well done Royal, as usual at the right place at the right time. Sorry to be a little different here but I think the cockpit windows look awful, the rest looks sweet though. Remember everyone, you saw it first here, kudos to a.net and Royal.

I'm not convinced the raised frame is the finished design. Some photographs and comments I read from the rollout suggest that the aircraft was fastened together (literally!) quickly for the rollout - look around and you'll find some images that hint at this.

Fully agree. There are many better photos available already (see threads on civil aviation) yet airlines accepted the one submitted by its own screener even if it does not meet any of a.net standards. Congrats Royal!

Uh, Royal did not send it to me via phone Big grin

I was about to go to work this morning and the email came in and I added it. Quality could have been better, agreed, but for such a historic event.....well you work out the rest for yourself. And if had been anyone else....still would have added it!

Last but not least, I think a.net can be damn proud that we were the first to display the pic of the 787 anywhere in the WHOLE WORLD...now that's something!

Not so sure, the one guy that got the best one would have had a winner if he walked a little closer to the edge of the bridge or wherever he was standing, big pole in the foreground. That would have been a nice shot. Not to mention were any of them uploaded?

Not really as it seems that after clearing my cache and re-loading the image, both dust spots are still standing proud!

Now as much as I love seeing these shots and how great the aircraft is, surely the same basic rules apply for photos as first types as well as the common ones? By this I mean the shot there that is very unlevel and very bright, could easily be fixed to look just as great and appealing as the others?

it was just a thought thats all. No jealously towards the photo or photographer at all.

OK first of all - your data is flat out wrong. I won't post a link here, but the "Brand X" Photo ID is # 6013988. And if you go there and look it up, you will see the following information:

Aircraft:

Boeing Company
Boeing 787-881
Location:

Snohomish County Airport/Paine Field - KPAE
USA - Washington

Registration/Serial No./Date:

N787BA
July 08, 2007

Quoting BrianW999 (Reply 35):

WRONG again. I see you're in the UK, so the 787 rollout event must have been past your bedtime, because it was a rather big deal here. In fact - it was broadcast worldwide, so you COULD have seen it if you had wanted to. Either way - I saw it - and I saw Royal's photo on airliners.net about 45 minutes later. Here on this part of the earth - it was still the 8th of July. Remember this site is hosted in Sweden, where it was the 9th at the time. In order to give Royal credit for truly being first - and HE WAS INDEED FIRST - as I was watching both sites very closely waiting to see the first shots, let's give him credit for having the shot actually accepted when it was the 8th of July where he was on this earth.

At no time have I disagreed that Royal was first, indeed he has my congratulations for that achievement.

My post was pointed at the totally unneccessary swipe at JP ( childishly referred to as "the other site" ) for not having any pics up at the time. Both sites, not to mention several others, do a good job of promoting aviation photography which is rather what its all about really ?. Anet might be the biggest database but that doesn't make it the be all and end all of our interest / hobby.

I am requesting that this thread be locked.

No need for any Airliners.net swipes or Jetphotos.net swipes. We were all at the event and had a great time. I let Tom use my laptop and internet connection to get his photos to JP, and was glad I did so. There was never any jealousy or non cooperation. Both sites have their fans and both sites delivered the goods. This back and forth stuff needs to stop. This hobby is big enough for both places. JP has some quality individuals. So does A.net.

I worked very hard to be first, and got the result that I wanted, as well as Johan wanted. For whatever reason this rubbed some people the wrong way. Is the photo perfect? No. But it served it's purpose. The 'real' pictures will come when the 787 begins it's runway work and eventually has it's first flight. There will be six aircraft flying out of BFI, so some great shots will be had.
