Motive?

Thu Jul 12, 2007 11:50 pm

Hi All,

Had this one rejected for 'motive':
http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/r...ctions/big/20070712_ab06153bwa.jpg

Just wanted opinions - did it have no chance at all?

I've seen similar photos accepted lately. On the other hand, I'm partial to my own 'creation', maybe I'm missing something here...

Cheers,
Andrei

I don't think there's anything wrong with the composition, although you may have tripped an a.net rule somewhere. I would have a play with the b&w conversion though - see if you can achieve deeper tones and contrast; I'd prefer a darker sky against the shiny fuselage.

Wow, that's a sweet shot!
Try it in normal colours, like James also said.

I think it was rejected for being B+W

Quoting AirKas1 (Reply 2):

I don't think that's what he meant.

Quoting Sulman (Reply 1):

James, thanks for the hint - it may make the shot look much better.

Quoting Ilikeflight (Reply 3):

I don't think it is the case - there were some similar BW shots accepted in the DB lately, here are just a few:

Unfortunately, there was no message from the screener. I recently complimented the screeners on putting personal messages in the rejection emails. Too bad, it has almost entirely stopped, at least in my case. More rejections, fewer comments...

Andrei

Please read reply #1 in this thread:

I'd say the motiv for having the photo in B&W in this case would be OK. Great shot!  bigthumbsup  Good luck.

Hi Andrei,

My first impression of the picture was that there is no real focus point in the picture. It's a bit flat and it just doesn't feel right with the tail so prominent in the foreground. And yes, I know I'm being vague here  Wink sorry about that.

IMHO using B&W should always have a purpose. Beside the airplane being a classic, a very dramatic sky, high contrast or whatever would be nice. I think that is missing here.

And BTW, you are very right about being 'partial' to your own creation. It happens to me all the time and it is exactly what keeps the fun in my hobby!

I reckon it could be because of the cutting off of the horizontal stab or maybe the rudder?

I don't know but all I think is, its a great shot and deserves to be in the DB.

Then again, its most probably a little too creative for here...

That was my first thought as well. It should have a place in the DB, but I think it should be re-cropped first.

Hi All, and thanks for the replies.

Tony, thanks for the link. One thing got my attention in the middle and in the end of the thread:

Quoting Clickhappy (Reply 8):
however they are usually converted incorrectly in Photoshop and are done to hide flaws that would be visible if left in color.

Quoting Clickhappy (Reply 10):
Old subjects, converted properly, will get in.

What does it mean - "converted incorrectly"? Probably just using 'desaturate' option? I converted it using 'Power Retouche' plugin, and I played around with it to make it look right. But than, again, if it was for incorrect conversion, it would have been 'editing', not 'motive', wouldn't it?

Quoting Diezel (Reply 6):

I kind of see what you mean, Roel, even though it is arguable... Still, I appreciate your opinion. Maybe I should try and follow James' advice:

Quoting Sulman (Reply 1):
see if you can achieve deeper tones and contrast

About the crop:

Quoting Eadster (Reply 7):
I reckon it could be because of the cutting off of the horizontal stab or maybe the rudder?

Quoting WakeTurbulence (Reply 8):

Martin, Matt, I don't really think it is because of the crop - there are tighter crops in the DB. I played with the crop quite a bit, this one seemed the best...

Anyway, it seems a bit like poking in the dark, without any screener's comments...

Here is the same photo in colour, by the way:

I sent you an IM 24 hours ago. If you choose to ignore the advice so be it, but don't tell people we are ignoring you.

Royal, I haven't received anything except the rejection email. And I've never said you are "ignoring" me. I just said it would be nice to have some feedback.

Royal, sorry, how stupid of me! I've never received an IM before and didn't even know where to look! Honestly, I didn't notice it. Just found it a minute ago. Thanks for your advice!

Hi All,

After an appeal, the photo has been accepted:

I wasn't really going to appeal; I don't do it often, mostly I just try to fix and re-upload; my two last appeals had been unsuccessful anyway, and I nearly decided that appealing would be a waste of time. However your support allowed me to build a "case" for an appeal; besides, your posts helped me learn something about my own picture; it is amazing how much you don't see until someone points it out to you...

James, Kas, Ilikeflight, Tony, Roel, Martin, Matt, Royal - thanks everyone!

Cheers,
Andrei
