$ St. Maarten Pic -- Yup, I'm Clueless

Thu Jul 19, 2007 3:09 am

Hey guys,

I've just recieved an email requesting the purchase of rights to a photo of mine.

It would be used on a 5' by 8' banner for display at a booth at the NBAA (National Business Aviation Association) convention.

Problem is, I have NO idea how much to ask for...although I definitely don't want to ask too high considering I'd LOVE to have them use my photo. Any seasoned pros out there want to give me a hand?

Thanks,

Chris

There is a fine line between a picture and a photo. The latter seems to be disappearing.

Hi,

As it is for commercial use rather than editorial or commentary purposes the price is usually more, certainly would be if the company concerned were to purchase it through an agency.

It also depends what rights to your image the company wants,if its just for a one show display $500 is a reasonable starting point, possibly more due to it being NBAA,if they want full license and copyright to your image then you should be asking for a lot more.

Try an agency like Scoopt or Getty Images and see if they will market it for you.

5' x 8' ?

I was once contacted for one of my photos to be used for 30" poster.
But they wanted 300dpi: something I could not deliver with D70+cropping...
Did they specify the required image size?

good luck, the shot is worth it!

Thanks Andy-

A little more information:

It's for the Aircraft Performance Group booth at NBAA (http://www.apg.aero/), and they just want the image for the one show display.

SFO, the sales / marketing rep told me they just need the largest resolution available for optimal print quality. Hopefully a cropped Canon Rebel photo shall suffice...!

You would be surprised what can be done nowadays with cropped images. KLM used one of my severely cropped pictures as a transparent full size cover on a glass door in the KLM crew center. The result was amazingly good. I never would have thought they could do that with that image.

But back to the subject. I would ask between $250 and $350 if it is for one time use only. I doubt you will get more for it. They do not ask for a special aircraft or situation and If they have enough time before the start of the convention you might find out that $250 is still too much as they will undoubtedly find another photog in time who will do it for free. There are 1.000.000+ images to choose from.

If you really want your picture on the banner than the other option is to ask for the goody basket full of merchandising stuff...that will almost always work but on the other hand some photogs consider that spoiling the market.

Ask them how much are they willing to pay if you are not sure about how much you should ask for; they might surprise you.
