Has My Sharpening Gone Seriously Mad?

Thu Jul 26, 2007 11:33 am

Hello fellas.

I just checked my queue to see 6 photos gone and no accepted, saw 6 photos rejected for oversharpened, shots that looked fine on my screen, and bit oversharpened on my mother's screen.

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/rejections/big/20070726_TC-ACZ-1465-17062007-CLN-DAe.jpg

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/rejections/big/20070726_N439SR-8261-14072007-HL-DA.jpg

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/rejections/big/20070726_TF-JMB-8132-14072007-DAE-HL.jpg
also quality, but I thought that Dash 8s were not common on grass airfields (and shots taken a couple of meters away on takeoff weren't ether common)

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/rejections/big/20070726_274-1493-17062007-CLN-DAE.jpg

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/rejections/big/20070726_TF-NPK-TF-JMB-8079-14072007-HL-DAE.jpg

What is wrong here? My screen too soft? The screener's screen too sharp? My acceptance ratio has now gone all the way to 60% and I'm getting worried.

Many thanks,

David

p.s. A 'teacher' of mine recommended me to sharpen using USM, 200% 0.2, applied two times. I need, on my screen, to do it four times or sometimes even more, to get satisifiing sharpness. I guess I'd stick to two-times... yes?

The DC3 and Dash 8 image is really nice.........very nice actually............but the processing is not your usual standard.
Definately oversharpened.

Too much sharpening eh? I don't know what my "usual standard" is! Should I rework them with less sharpening and upload again? Should I try using a sharp Apple screen for right sharpening?

Thanks,
David

PS: http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/r...Regional-4523-11062007-BSL-DAE.jpg

Rejected for overexposed, it seems that the only reason is that there's a little patch on the nose that's "too hot" (screener said). What's going on?! Am I getting crazy or are the standards going up like a rocket?

edit: and oh, I bought Spyder calibration system, learned how to calibrate, and more problems...

Hi David,

All pictures as shown have serious problems (and I mean serious  Wink ), mostly way oversharpened, and some have also problems with brightness/contrast. Having seen many of your other pics I think as Gary pointed out this is purely an editing problem. You just need to get a grip on your monitor settings again, and I'm sure it will be fine!

I just wanted to tell you that shot was not only oversharpened, but also a little grainy. That's why 'quality' was given.

Thank heaven (sorry for saying this as I don't believe in God)! But I must, as you said, get a grip at the monitor settings... but still I don't get this... sharpening fine on THIS screen, means that THIS screen is not in order... I didn't know you could change the sharpness of screens, or what?

Yh they are oversharpened. Almost to a stage where extreme heat causes jaggies. Maybe just undersharpen them on your screen to adapt.

As in sharpen less?? You can also sharpen on your moms screen and then send it to your computer to get an idea what it should look like on your computer.

Resubmit that DC-3/Dash-8 Photo.

Will re-edit all the photos that were rejected [except the takeoff Dash 8, Hongyin  sarcastic ], upload them on the net and post here. Will use my screen and not sharpen more than 200% 0.2 x 2 and 75% x 1.

I'm curious then - why wasn't the grainy reject used instead of quality?

IMO, Quality is kind of an unnecessary item. If the photo is rejected, then it stands to reason that it didn't have the quality necessary to be accepted. If there's JPEG artifacts, then there should be a compression artifacts rejection. "Quality" is far too vague and can mean too many different things.

Hi,

A big hello to you all  Smile I have been reading this forum for a while now and would like to thankyou all for the excellent advise given over the last year, I am now able to post at last!!

I am a new paid up member now I can post  Smile like everyone else yes they appear oversharpened, but when you double click them and open up in a full browser window they loose the jaggies.

This is a phenomenon that has always baffled me, as this has also happened to some of my shots, and I often think....yes they show jaggies but open them up into a large window please and they go!!

Could anyone please advise me on this, I hope I haven't "hijacked" this thread, I guess it follows on from what we are all talking about.

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Aero145,

.....care to let us know what new screen you are using?!

I quite recently bought myself a new screen as well, and it has a whole range of different sharpness pre-settings.
Most of which make the pic's look really awkward, if you ask me!!  Yeah sure

I have a few pic's in the queu that have been edited on the new screen and I'm interested in seeing how they make it through the screeningprocess.
In thrust I trust.

I use an old TFT screen that I don't know the name of, my mom's screen is a PowerBook screen - a very "high acceptance" photographer here in the DB uses a PowerBook screen for all his photos and they are superb.

So, I will maybe be using an iMac screen but not yet.

So, I'm not using a new screen.  Smile

Might I suggest using unsharp mask settings of 50__0.2__0 and take the sharpening up gradually until you first see some jaggies. Go back one step with Ctrl+Z and then use a layer mask between each sharpening pass, erasing any jaggies etc. that appear, as you go ?

You should always view the large version of the picture because that is their true size. Any downsizing will result in jaggies and possibly other issues.

Thanks Fly,

So when we reduce the size to around 1200, is the photo viewed by the screeners at this size or do they zoom in to check it

Sorry for the ignorance

Say a photo is uploaded at 1024 pixels wide, the screeners will see it at 1024 pixels wide. There wont be any need for them to zoom in because it will open up in the size you sent it to them. Same follows for 1000 thru 1600 pixs.

Basically, they see it in actual pixels.
