Russian Military Planes - Strange Registration

Wed Aug 15, 2007 4:48 pm

Has looked here photos of the Russian military planes and has seen strange numbers of registration - 28RED, 10BLUE... And how to define that it RED, GREEN or BLUE? Also what it gives? Number one (for example 28RED), and in photos planes all different In what sense to specify such registration?

Good luck!

I wondered the same thing why it's important to mention it in the reg field but it seems that the Red, White, Blues stands for the color of the Reg painted on the plane.

Russian military aircraft have no real registrations, I assume the construction number is used instead.

The numbers painted on the aircraft typically only identifiy an aircraft within a unit, so they are really codes, but they are used as the registration on Airliners.net for lack of anything else.

Different squadrons within a regiment (wing) use different colours, so the colour is significant. This is why plane spotters traditionally note the colour, and why A.net wants Russian military aircraft listed like this.

However, few people know about this, and also the desired format is not clear. One of the editors showed me the offical rule and it says the format should be 1 white (no capitals), however if you upload this way screeners will often change this to 1 WHITE.

It's a bit messy, and maybe it would be better to get rid of this.

Peter,
That is exactly how I see it. I never reject for them being wrong unless there are other reasons and correct them when I can.

I have asked an Editor to add something to this thread

As I understand it, the official usage should be (eg) "86 blue".

It is not the screeners who change to capitals. I uploaded "86 blue" recently, and the upload scripts automatically changed it to "86 BLUE". I assume Johan wanted to ensure that "g-wizz" would always be listed in the db as "G-WIZZ" and hence the script.

I simply submitted a correction to make it "86 blue" and that worked a charm, thanks to the editor team.

Ahhh, I see. Sorry screeners. Smile

But wouldn't it be better to change the offical format to 86 BLUE then? Even though that doesn't look very sophisticated typographically.

It became simple to me interestingly, to that I have loaded three photos, on two there is number, and in one photo Òó-160 and numbers there are not present, only a name on a fuselage. Where there is number, I have specified only number without color and now I do not know will accept these photos or not. I do not know what color to write to these numbers.
Good luck!

Don't worry Andrei, you won't get rejections over it if you don't specify a colour.

Fully correct. Including the space between the number and the colour (which is often left out).

Quoting TZ (Reply 4):
the upload scripts automatically changed it to "86 BLUE".

Hm, I wasn't aware of this. Very unfortunate, although the reason for having such a script in place is obvious. Removing it would certainly create even more problems.

We are currently discussing this. You are right, the capitals don't look nice at all, and there may be other ways to solve this problem.

Andrei, if there are no numbers visible on a Russian military aircraft, then the photo will not be rejected for that. For aircraft that do have a number, just specify the colour with which the number is painted on the aircraft. The aircraft in the example in your first post all have the number "28" painted in red on the aircraft.

I have understood all, thanks Smile All has appeared very simply. It is necessary to specify color which has number onboard the plane. If will allow, I shall not add now color of number to not lose two days of turn. But, if these photos will accept, I shall add color to number in correction of the information. Thanks for understanding Smile
Good luck!
