Canon EF 24-105mm F/4 L Is Lens: Tight Zoom Ring?

Mon Sep 17, 2007 7:12 am

Hi all,

I recently got a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS lens for my XTi. I also have a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L lens. The 24-105 has a super tight zoom ring compared to the 17-40. On the 17-40 the zoom ring is super smooth and I can accurately adjust it with just my thumb. On the 24-105 I really need to grab it with two fingers to turn it. It works, but it's not smooth.

Is the tighter zoom normal for the 24-105 (due to its heavier weight perhaps)? Or did I maybe pick up a not-so-good copy?

Thanks,

Tony

Maybe your 17-40mm zoom ring is loose?  eyebrow

My 24-105mm zoom ring is just fine.

I don't think your alone. I've also noticed the 24-105 L seems to be fairly tight on the zoom compared to most lenses. Never been enough to complain about though.

I find the zoom ring on my 24-105 to be a little loose actually... I am considering taking it to Canon for them to have a look. I still need two fingers to move it but it seems a little easier than it used to be.

I don't believe so. I think it's just about right: it's smooth without the lens moving around on its own.

I really wouldn't call mine loose!

I'd take it to Canon to have a look. There is always a chance that something is not right. Seals or tension ring perhaps?

Love it. If I only had one lens for my camera, this would be it. It has a decent zoom range and good performing AF as well as having IS. The only lens that might be better would be the 24-70 f/2.8L but I'd prefer the 24-105 due to its greater overall flexibility.

Hey,
Yes my 24-105 4.0 L IS has also a very tight zoom, certainly compared to my 70-200 2.8 L IS which has a smoother zoom.
Just get use to it !
Succes,Greetings Johan Knijn
