Would You Give Me A Hand?

Tue Sep 18, 2007 12:56 am

I took the photos below about 1 year ago and I just love them because of the unique (and rare!) combination of dark storm clouds, golden evening lighting, and fall colours on the trees. At the time I tried 2-3 separate times to upload without success, so I decided to leaved them for the old personal collection. The reason for rejection was always because of bad colours. There was also some debate about the fluorescent strips around the winglet and underneath the door, but that was put to rest because this phenomenon is common with Air Canada's scheme under certain lighting conditions.

Well it's fall again and with the trees changing colours I remembered these images so I've decided to have another go. Would anyone be so kind as to offer some suggestions as to how to properly correct the colours/white balance of these images? Feel free to post examples that you've edited. Also, let me know which of the two you prefer for an upload (at the time I worked on the frontal shot).

All suggestions/opinions are welcomed, especially those of the screeners. Thanks in advance for any help!

AC888YOW,

I remember that picture quite well and found it sad that you gave up on it as I believe it's quite an exceptional one.
It's pretty difficult though to have a go at them from those small 'previews' you linked to the thread. I'd be more than happy to give you a hand if you'd send me the original file.
I'll send you my e-mail address via PM.

Cheers,

Thierry

I prefer the second picture because I think the sunlit sign in the first one is distracting.

I'm not good at colour issues myself, but the 'neutral grey' principle discussed recently suggests something like this:

It looks very differently, but it does look good to me.

I think you found a bad grey there, that looks way to cool IMO.

As mentioned that one looks too cool, but I think that's on the right track. Where was this neutral grey principle discussed?

Another Colour Rejection.. (by KLM772ER Aug 27 2007 in Aviation Photography)

In the Photoshop Levels window, there's a Set Grey Point option and all I did was pointing it at the tarmac. In the thread, one of the screeners - Mick - suggests that asphalt should be a colourless gray, although he doesn't seem to use this Set Grey Point tool himself.

I use this method almost all the time when it comes to color. My first source of neutral gray is something on the aircraft, either a leading edge flap, a main landing gear door, or the underside of a wing. If I can't find it there I normally move to something in the background or some form on concrete.

Thanks to everyone for their help. Between the information posted here and help I've received via email I think I'm well on my way. With any luck that picture will make it up one of these days.

Just a little update ...

This is the first and last time you'll ever see me plug my own photo, but I felt it relevant considering this thread so here goes.

You'll notice that I finally managed to edit a version of this shot that the screeners approved of (it only took a year!). I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped me with tips, pointers, lessons, advice, and even edits of their own (you know who you are).

Best,

- Peter -

Royal,

I totally missed your comment the first time so I just went back and read it. It's been a long time since I brushed up on these criteria so thanks for the reminder. Thanks also for handling it the way you did.
