How To Do This!? LAX

Sat Sep 29, 2007 2:41 am

Hey guys,

I know this has probably been cooked to the point of rawness, but I just have to ask how does Mr. Sam Chui get to take photos like this.

I understand it may be a huge lens, but as I can see from the photo, he is really close to action...

Oh well, just looking to find an answer to my huge question  Smile

Thanks in advance guys!

He gets ramp access there, as do some others on this site.

Although I wonder why LH still takes off with him airside...!?  boxedin

It's all about who you know and how you ask in general... your selected three might not be the easiest to start tho  Wink
Some airports already do offer airside tours for photographers ( ZRH for example...), others are possible to get into also. Again...all about how and whom you ask I guess.

Pretty much have to work for the airport or an airline at the airport to gain ramp access. I have ramp access but it's not like you can just go willy nilly walking around taking pictures where ever you wish. I only shoot on my off days and I make darn sure I left airport ops and the airport police know I will be out shooting. Even then I only shoot directly under our gate here. And this is just CMH. I can't even imagine what it is like at LAX or JFK. Ramp access doesn't always translate into great pictures. It's all about who you know and how you go about it.

Being that close to the runway is no joke. Those shots were all in the 20mm range, shooting that wide it is hard to avoid motion blur and the stuff comes at you so fast you get one shot at it. And then you get engulfed in a cloud of rubber smoke...

Hi Enrique

I think reply 4 is better than my prepared answer.

In any trade, whether is financial markets, photography or anything, the ability to develop contacts, networking, detail research, patience and keep trying will definity help you to achieve the goal you seek.

I started photo planes in 1999, the first time I step on LAX is 2004. Few years of trying to yield the results.

Yeah!
Sam is right. Take time and figure out and you will find some ways to get into this one day. Just like the one I figured out and start trying one (my first step and hope to get further later on) -

This is my first attempt beyond the line http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1272430/M/

Not surprise - later I may try at YYZ as well

Cheers!

Hi Enrique

Sam!

I wasn't expecting the photographer in question to answer my doubt. What an honor!

I'd like to tell you - even if you already know it - how lucky you are. It is a dream for me to become as lucky and as dedicated as you. Being so close to the action, as most of your photos show us, is perhaps the best price for an aviation enthusiast. I've followed your carreer for a long time and I must admit that sometimes I get frustrated to see how you accomplish some impossible shots; but at the same time, makes me happy because it means it's possible.

Now, do you stand beside the runway when you take photos like this one? Alone!?

Thanks Sam, I appreciate your answer with all my heart.

Please keep the good work, your photos are what aviation is all about. Congratulations!

You could just say you are an FAA inspector and need to check with your camera lens that the aircraft are taking off properly  Wink

I actually have one of Sams shots as my wallpaper.
Talk about wrong time wrong place.I was at LAX in 98 with an old russian camera, cheap 200mm zoom and got a load of cracking shots while waiting to fly back.If only digital was around then.I cant even scan those pics, because i had so many pictures from all over the place, over the years and moving house a couple of times, nearly all of them have been mislaid.....Arrrrrrgh.

I've been informed that ramp access via airport ops has been stopped.

This is due to an unfortunate incident involving four individuals and a certain photo that was snapped and spread on the internet which got back to airport management who did not think the photo was funny at all.

I would like to thank the four involved (two of whom are out of towners) for ruining this wonderful access that we had. I must say that I am very disappointed by three of the four, the fourth who is not a friend to most here at LAX does not surprise me as he has created problems here at LAX for a number of years now.

I have built a good reputation with airports and greatly appreciated the access they have allowed myself and a few of my friends and special guests, but because of this one childish incident by a few, ramp access is now denied to all.

I hope in the future we may again regain access.

At every airport you have the risk of people doing stupid things and making our reputation as a group go down the drain with airport staff. Last week some French people managed to break (?) into a prohibited area at AMS to take some pictures. They were removed by security, but this goes on all the time. Some people are so brainless.. But what do they care, they take their shots and go back home, not to return for a long time.  grumpy

Heard of that Michael, shame the access is now denied to all. Hope you can get them to ease up again (sooner or) later.

Damn that sucks... how disapointing.

I get very good access at Melbourne because my office is airside, although having said that I don't often shoot there out of fear of being told off by airside security. Its only happened once, and it was actually the Federal Police who told me to put my camera away because there was a sensitive aircraft coming (Mexican Air Force B757), to which I obliged.

I suppose as long as you respect the rules then you are fine. Anytime I have something specific I want to photograph I usually call them and ask first. Once when I was shooting the safety car actually took me out beside the runway but it was dark and all my shots were blurry.  Sad

I'm glad one of my close up airside shots from that night did well though:

Jop, everywhere the same. In DUS ramp shooting was allowed, at least for people with ramp access but one day somebody took a picture of an aircraft on the ramp, dropping some liquid. Nothing special, but the person sold the picture to a big German magazine which made a big story of it, with the result that the airport authorities forbid any camera equipment on the ramp.

BTW: Just out of interest. How do they prevent unwanted people to cross the canals in AMS in cold winters when they're frozen?

You try it sometime, it will result in a nice cold dive Smile seriously though, they have a way of pumping awa water so that the ice stays very thin and cannot be walked on.

Speedbird 128, care to explain further on whats happening on the old BKK? I am very interested to hear why BKK has stopped......

My last trip to BKK ramp was Mar 2005 and after I was told due to the move to new BKK airport with not enough staff member, the ramp access has been terminated.

hey sam, havent seen too many of your air to air shots from LAX lately, most unique shots, also wondering can you make your shots as sharp as these you've taken, or this is probably due to lighting.

http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1110169/M/
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1115485/M/

those two are some of your sharper shots, Im guessing its because of the good lighting available on 24's at dusk. Keep on the good work.

Certainly the good lighting will help, but I tend to sharpen a lot on those pics to make them stand hard. Remember only summer months for 24 North Side spotting  Smile

Perhaps it may have been allowed again after cooling down... But somebody here couldn't stay within the guidelines of the access and it was subsequently terminated...
