Another Camera Thread: Canon 350D Vs. Nikon D40x

Sat Oct 06, 2007 2:02 pm

Hi guys,

I'm seriously considering these two digital SLRs, and would like your thoughts on this. My budget is at most ~$700.

Canon 350D (Digital Rebel XT) kit

Nikon D40x kit

These are my two top picks right now, and I'm leaning toward the Canon because of the price. But, I like the looks of the Nikon better, and also the layout of the buttons. Would it be worth it to pay the extra $150 for the Nikon's extra megapixels and better layout?

Thanks,

Will

They're both good cameras I'm sure. Once you buy your first body, you're committing yourself to an entire product line that you will be investing your money into as you fill your equipment bag. (unless you stoop to buying sigma crap  Wink )

So, be sure to think about the Lenses, flashes, external devices (ie. cable release), and who you'll be shooting with. I got Canon because it's been a household name around my family and friends. We can all give eachother support on our problems and swap lenses when we're shooting together. If I'd gotten Nikon, sure I would have gotten a good camera, but I woulda been on my own, without the help and support of my friends.

The D40 is neutered because it can only use AF-S lenses (lenses with internal focus motors) which leaves you out of a ton of Nikon Lenses. They'll mount and meter, but they won't AF.

Get a D80 or an old D50/D70s if you want to use a Nikon.

You can pick up Used D50's or D70's on ebay for around $400 or a fairly new D80 for around $650

Alright, thanks for your opinions.

Since the D80's quite a bit over my budget and I'd like to get a new product, I'm definitely leaning toward the 350D.

Thanks for the replies; keep them coming!  Smile

The D70s and D80 ideas are good but I'd certainly choose a 350D over a D50. Let's not forget the guy's budget here also - bear in mind that the D70s and D80 are intermediate cameras and not entry-level models.

Have you considered the 400D? The replacement for the 350D, it has 10.1MP and a self-cleaning sensor, and is in my opinion better than both the D40/D40x and D50.

No, I hadn't until you mentioned it - I noticed that B&H photo has a used kit for $595.

Would it be better to get a new camera as opposed to a used one?
