My Crap Remark To Screeners...

Fri Oct 19, 2007 5:39 am

A few days ago - this photo of mine was rejected for reasons - SOFT and not LEVEL...

Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 708 File size: 440kb

I was a bit critical about this rejection - and lacking good judgement - sent a message to the screeners saying something like this -

"You gotta be kidding me? Soft and unlevel? This photo is not soft or unlevel... but if you don't want this new REG photo in the DB - it will not be included in the DB. Thanks for your time !!! Have a nice day !!! Keep up the great work !!!"

Gary Watt replied real quick - he remarked that since I was an x-screener - I should have known better than to send an email such as this...

Being a former screener - my ego is sometimes a bit over the top.

This photo was rejected by a screener-in-training - I should have been a bit more patient about it - maybe I should have emailed one of the head screeners of this matter - since the appeal function was not operating up to par at the time...

This photo is very insignificant - it is no big deal - as are all of my photos - not very important...

My apology to the screener-in-training who rejected it. I made a few bad calls while I was a screener-in-training and a few after being accepted to the screener team. There's alot happening now with Airliners.net - the matter of this photo is not at all important...

I think I need to take a rest - I will not be uploading photos anytime soon - lots of bugs in the system and I don't want to slow the system down in any way... I am sorry for my immature response to this rejection...  Smile

As I said previous - I will not be uploading anytime soon - but I would appreciate input on this rejection.. This one rejected for color - screener remark - "Reddish hue."

Terry
As an ex-screener you are very well aware that your outburst the other day is mild compared to what we do see.
However I am pleased to say that this is the first PUBLIC apology I have ever seen for such an outburst that could have remained between you and us. Thank you for that.
I know that everyone is feeling frustrated at the moment, and understandably as this damned site has become a part of the lives of all of us. Whilst no-one could pretend that things have gone smoothly, we can at least be sure that the problems are all being worked upon. I am not happy, (who could be ?) but we just have to grin and bear it don't we ?

As to the colour one
I have not seen this image and am pleased to see the helpful personal. I could see the red hue (cast) from the thumbnail. It is very evident in the sky though strangely not the rest of the image and a few units of cyan should easily correct that.

Mick -

Thanks for your reply. I'm not trying to make anybody look bad. I'm simply too critical sometimes... The sky on hazy days can be tricky. The color of the aircraft looks true - as you agree - whites are white. However, hazy day sunlight sometimes colors the sky and clouds with a reddish hue...

Thanks for talking to me Mick. I appreciate your quick and accurate response...  Smile

The whites are not the best place to detect a cast, that is the mid-tones.
I did a quick play and was very surprised to see how much correction it did actually take.
I use CS2 and added 18 units of cyan (I had guesstimated 5) to correct it .
I do not have time to post my correction here as I am off to work, but try it and you will see

Mick -

Thanks for your time and advise. I will try to make the photo better... but I'm still confused about hazy day photos... haze is sometimes tough, but looks great when captured and processed in a way that looks natural...

Hi terry.
Lovely shots from you as always.
I have had time off from uploading also and i can say that it does one a world of good as it did for me.
But getting back to your shot i can see the red hue more evident in the sky the sun looks high in the sky so late afternoon reddish would not be that strong.
Good luck with them .
Cheers

Great shot above - by the way - when will we see more?

I'm working on the reddish thing - I usually shoot little airplanes on grass - on clear days - pavement and haze is challenging me lately...  Smile

Terry

Your public and personal apologies were most appreciated. I wish more would do that.

Your comments were not bad at all but I felt a little upset that this came from an ex-screener, one who was well respected within the crew.

Everyone is frustrated at the moment - I personally will not upload until the dust settles.

My sympathy lies with the screeners, who bear the brunt of the dissatisfaction caused by the incompetence of tthe new owners of the site.

Shep made a handsome apology - bravo.

Hello Terry.

I also would like to applaud you for your thread here. Let's face it, all of us show our human frailties much of the time, many of us on this Forum or in the context of our time on this site  wink . And given the fiasco we have all had to endure recently, those 'achilles heels' are even more exposed. The issue is not making the mistake, it is whether we have the insight to see it for what it is and then how we handle it.

If only more people were big enough to acknowledge they made a mistake or got it wrong more than this site would be better off. Well done to you for having the courage to apologise - particularly publicly. If I were the screener in question I would be sending you a personal email of thanks. Given the beating the screeners get, I am sure the person in question's shoulders are broad enough!

All the best.

Quoting Shep2 (Reply 7):

Hopefully soon as I'm in the market to get my new camera now that a few drama issues in my life has settled i wont go into details in the forums.

I had an issue with reddish ting when i realised that it was my in camera settings that was causing it when i changed the settings it sorted the problem out.
Thank you once again for the kind words terry and hope to see more from you soon.
Cheers

That's not a reddish hue, there are light clouds back there.
I didn't get a 'Harumph' outta that guy!

There is actually quite a strong clour cast and the clouds are where it is most evident. I use CS2 and added 18 cyan to get this. I am on a new monitor but edited it yesterday on the old one and am pleased to say that it looks exactly the same.
Note that the pinkness in the sky has mostly gone (though slightly evident to the right for some reason) and the greys such as the cockpit frame, tarmac and nosewheel are perfectly neutral. Neither a pure black nor a pure white should ever show a cast.
I thought that Terry's was a touch bright too so darkened it a little. Looks spot on to me now but I would welcome comments on the brightness of my edit

Hmm...

Perhaps I get flamed for this, but a press on the 'auto colour' button and some more brightness gave me this:

Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 694 File size: 244kb

It's less green than Mick's, and to me it looks better.

Cheers...

Edit: something is not going right here... Does it work now?  boggled

Ed
Flamed ? No, a difference of opinion, that is all  Smile
In my edit look at the clouds to the top left, the fluffy, light-grey ones, and the red has gone. With yours it is still evident.
Either way, both are much closer than Terry's and I think that we would agree that whilst Terry's was a valid rejection, both of our edits, whilst subtly different, would be close enough to be acceptable

And to all others -

Thanks for your comments - thanks for stopping by and talking to me during my time of rejection frustration.

The "reddish hue" photo has been discussed. Mick and Eduard have been kind and given me tips to save this one...

Now, how about the one at the top of my post - rejected as soft and not level... any suggestions?

Maybe the "screener-in-training" is out there and will comment on this one?

Business is slow - so to speak lately... migration of Airliners.net not a big success as of late...

Don't be shy - you can talk of your rejection of this insignificant photo...

Please - talk to me !!!  Smile

Another point, if you have any questions or problems about images currently in the database please contact the photographer who took the image in the first instance.

Thanks in advance.
