Stolen F-15C Photo On Wikipedia

Sat Oct 20, 2007 9:14 pm

Dear all

I am getting very frustrated. Some weeks ago I discovered my top F-15C photo as a title photo on the Wikipedia F-15 page. There it is said to be an USAF photo taken by by USAF personnel and thus in the Public Domain see below.

As many of you know, this photo was submitted by me and indeed taken by me, and thus is not in the public domain. Further the photo has not been published anywhere, except on Airliners Net, not even on my own photo page. I have tried writing to Wikipedia on this and had no response. I have offered them to link to my AN photo and thus credit me, but again no reply. I am really at my wits end, and wonder if any of you guys have had similar problems with Wikipedia.

Enough for now.

As Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, could you not delete the photo, citing your reasons for doing so in the history? I am presuming images can be edited like text, although I admit I have never had cause to remove one before.

I've tracked down the image you're referring by comparing the images on the page to your photos in the database. Next time, it would be easier if you posted a link to the photo page on Wikipedia.  Smile

The image is actually hosted on Wikimedia Commons, a repository that hosts images for use across several Wikimedia/Wikipedia sites. I've tagged it for speedy deletion as a copyright violation. For future reference, instructions to have an image removed can be found here:

Tagged that one for deletion too.

I assume that most people either don't know or don't care about copyrights; they see a picture they want to add to some article and upload it. Every now and then I'll do a search for airliners.net (and other photo sites) on Wikipedia and often find copyright violations. I guess I need to make a pass through Wikimedia Commons sometime soon and do the same.
