Things That Make You Go Hmmmm......

Sat Oct 27, 2007 9:13 pm

Got it????? If not......here is a close up.....

and here is the rest of the story:

A debate on a website for sports photographers centers around whether or not a photographer would be fired for such a mistake.

As a photographer who has made every mistake in the book (Forgot to remove lens cap? Been there. Forgot this camera or that lens? Done that. Forgot flash card? Check. Wrong place at the wrong time? Check, check and check), I have total sympathy for the guy.

And luckily for me, my new photo editor Carrie Niland backs me up. Halfway through the thread linked above, she writes,

"We all have done something stupid. And if you haven't yet, you will. No one is perfect. I know great photographers that have forgotten to put CF cards in, forgotten to put film in, and yes, forgotten to take a lens cap off. Everyone makes a mistake at some point.'

He shouldn't be fired in this situation. Its not like the player is Tom Brady or even Peyton Manning...  Wink Who cares about Eli.

Pretty sure he's really embarrassed to see this photo going rounds on the internet. I've also been there before, snapped away ( actually last week  Smile ) with my camera and no cf in, even though the LCD says "NO CF" when you turn on the camera....and didnt notice until I was about to take out the card and upload them to my pc. Bad luck especially, as it was my personal 'no chimping' day...  Wow!

It looks like it was his alternate body and he simply had forgotten.

Surely your guys' cameras have a custom function for CF lock, where the shutter won't fire if there's no card or if it's full?

They do, but it's good practice to allow shooting without a card just in case you need to grab an important shot with little notice and there isn't one in for whatever reason...

Many a time I've gone to frame a shot only to discover that the lens cap is on. Can't say I've ever actually tried shooting with it on, though, you notice the problem pretty quickly...  Wink

But you're not going to be able to stick in a card and write to it, the photos won't stay in the buffer. As soon as you let go of the shutter, it's gone...

Kinda curious about that as well... what sort of camera saves it's frame buffer without a card installed??

I am more inclined to leave the lens cap off in case I need to grab an important shot!

Cheers

If your camera sends text messages, that could explain why your photos are rubbish!

Yeap, I've done that before with the lens cap on. I've also forgotten to take filters off, resulting in a bunch of images which are in the wrong hue, or have casts. I think that's even more annoying than leaving the lens cap on actually!

Yeah we have all done it. Lens cap on, camera to eye then bang! you miss it! lol

One of my worse mistakes was all my own fault and basically involved having a sync cord attached to the camera and turning and walking without thinking and dragging two elinchrom's off their stand's from about 5ft. Luckily one came down on the softbox and survived and only bent the softbox rod's, the other however ripped the brolley and smashed the bulb. Again i was lucky that it was only the moddelling light and not the actual flash tube!

A lesson that tells you, you just have to think and be careful!
