JAX Beach... No Big Cameras?

Wed Oct 31, 2007 5:12 am

I'm planning to go the the Jacksonville Sea and Sky Spectacular this weekend. Upon browsing the cities website about the event, under the items allowed I read..

"Cameras less than one inch lens"

They can't seriously enforce this. The whole list looks ridiculous, how can they restrict and enforce this, especially at a beach show. The only other one I've been to (Ft. Lauderdale) didn't even have an entrance or a security check point.

Here's the whole list...

I'm only guessing, but it looks like they forgot to put a number in there such as "7 inch lens" or something similar. While security is getting rather onerous at some events, I've never seen anything as restrictive as one inch. Maybe you can contact them to get more info or request a media pass?

Best of luck sorting it out...

Pretty poorly written web page, it now says.... Cameras (less than six- inch lens)

Strange list of permitted and not permitted, picnic baskets & beverages are out but chairs, flags and EMPTY spray bottles are OK???

And your Fanny pack must be LARGER than 8.5 x 11!!

These restrictions are fast taking the fun out of events.
If your camera sends text messages, that could explain why your photos are rubbish!

I bet it is money related. to bring a decent camera = media pass = big money.

I contacted the city like 2 months ago and no one got back to me.

Wow just since I wrote this last night, it's changed. Now there's no specified inch amount, it just says (less than inch lens)

and now it looks like I can bring my camera bad (it is indeed larger than an 8.5x11 but my camera is still on the rocks.

I hope the show isn't as disorganized as this web page.

Ok on a different computer I see six as well.

I really hope they don't enforce this.

I would suggest everyone planning to attend this show do what I have just done.
Contact the Mayor's Office at: 904-630-1776.
The lady who answered thought it might be a military issue/request and then transferred me to a gentleman named Dan McCarthy, the military rep for the show. He absolutely agreed that this rule is ludicrous and can't be enforced on public property.
He then asked me to contact Teresa Price or Christina at the Special Events Ofc. at 904-630-3690 to see what the reasoning was. Neither lady answered, so I left a message asking for a return call.
The more calls they get reminding them that America is not yet a police state or gulag- the better.

My thoughts exactly, and good thinking on calling. If you hear back let me know and I'll call as well.

Thanks for the help.

I have just received a return call from Ms. Langston of the City of Jacksonville Special Events office on the subject of cameras & lenses at the Sea & Sky Spectacular. Ms.Langston states that this rule will not be enforced and to feel free to use any lens you wish.

She has one request: she would like to use some of the shots taken and very kindly asks that we forward some shots of the show, aircraft, and, attending crowd to her at: langston@coj.net

Pls. help support & show appreciation to our local public government for hosting this show with your photos, thanks!

I wonder if the same is to be said about the backpacks. The site says they're prohibited, so where does that leave the photographers with backpack style camera bags (myself included)?

Either way good to hear about the lens issue, I was worried for a little while there.

As a student at JU I will be sure to show my appreciation and send some shots.

Well done Mcdonobr, Good to see positive results can be achieved with a procative approach.

I had a similar result with the with the Australian Grand Prix office a few years back after an attempted ban on lenses with more than 200mm focal length

Cheers

Joey, you won't be the only one with the 80-400 or the 100-400. Many photographers will be there with their 500 and/or 600mm lenses. They won't enforce it. In fact, with all the people in attendance, they don't have the manpower to check every single pcs of baggage and camera gear.

While I agree they probably couldn't enforce the ridiculous rules they have publicised, what complete idiot wrote them in the first place? If I were the organisers I would seriously be thinking about changing my publicist!

Anyway, I won't be going, I can't get a flight - and it's already the 4th November! Big grin

You gotta love America, land of the free, home of the idiot web site!  duck   stirthepot

I actually did get warned about my backpack. I was at 9th Ave North and was told not to go past 6th Ave with the back pack. The guy said it would be a security breach....

On a good note though, I had no lens trouble.

Some guy said that? Unless if he worked for the Feds or Dept of Homeland Security, I'd be like, okay, whatever dude.

Nice shots from the show, BTW. Glad to know everything worked out.

Cheers.

Are you kidding...since when is photography a felony...I'll tell you since when...since 9/11...THANKS ALQEADA...THANKS TALIBAN...Our brainiac MAYOR, New York City's Mayor Blumberg legislated law/ruling, photography in the streets of New York is not allowed. Yet he wants the world to come to his great city to spend Millions annually in tourist dollars...but no snaps...Can you imagine dreaming for years a trip to America with your wife and kids, arriving at JFK...HEY!...NO PHOTOS...(besides, the airports a mess ,so quite frankly, photo ops better somewhere else) then arrive into your hotel in NYC four hours later (just to drive ten miles) and you get a ticket and possibly your camera impounded. ARGH!!!....I can't take it! When is this insanity going to end..........................................sorry......I had to vent..............

Georg, twice this summer I had to go to Germany to photograph VP-CWW,the first time in Frankfurt, the second in Dusseldorf, however, that week I stayed in Munchen and hiked up to Dusseldorf on Air Berlin,( I like the German Playboys they hand out on the flight, nice touch!)...anyway I spent most of the trip photographing at EDDF,EDDS and EDDM. The airports have great facilities for spotting and it is encouraged, actually asked local police if they mind if I set up and took photos at night in EDDF terminal...they proceeded to laugh ,that I even asked and furthermore, asked me if they could be of any further help...I stood silent in disbelief....3rd time to Germany...all were fantastic times met great, helpful people...coming back to the states is another story, after arriving JFK, we sat on taxiway for 50 minutes as our A346 is to large and they had no place to put us...five minutes into customs and I'm confonted by a customs agent, barely english capable, yelling at me to turn off my cell phone...It wasn't even on!...I had just placed it on my belt....the way she reacted, you'd think I just placed a gun holster on my hip....Thanks to German hospitality, 230 KPH on the Autobahn, I was able to relax enough to blow her off quietly....Danke shon...Jerry
