Camera Settings,Nikon D70S Please Help

Fri Nov 23, 2007 4:23 pm

Hi
I have bought Nikon D70s with 18-70mm lence and sigma 70-300mm lense, I have tried to take some pics at heathrow but i guess my camera settings are not good enought and I personally dont know much about DSLR.
Could anyone please help me out what settings should I keep, what file size and other whitebalance settings and stuff.
Hope I would get some help.
thanks

I have a D80 and D200 but i have used a D70 in the past.

Shooting menu:
Optimize image>custom> 1.Image sharpening>normal 2. tone compression>normal 3 saturation>normal
Image quality>jpeg fine
Image size>large
White balance>auto (personal preference)
ISO>100 (depends on light)

I would recommend shooting in aperture priority mode at first. Usually in bright daylight you can have it at f/8, and as light falls off you can open up to a bigger aperture like f/7.1 f/6.3 and so on. If you really need a higher shutter speed as it gets even darker you can increase your ISO too but anything above 400 and your likely to notice lots of grain.

I usually leave Optimize Image at default: tried extra saturation and sharpening but later found that it is easier to adjust later. For that reason also, I would shoot RAW.
I try to use highest shutter speeds (except for props) - especially if using non-VR lens.

I did not have much luck with ISO over 200. I have heard D80, 200, 300 are much better at that.

Maybe you could post some of your photos in this thread?

Good advice. I would turn off all in camera sharpening and saturation etc. Do that later in post processing.

As ISO and shutter settings this will vary with conditions and your skill. If you get good sun and you can keep that camera still you can shoot at 100 or a little more. With the lowest shutter speed too you will get nice results. I advise a good book on photography and a lot of practice out at the airport. You will see results.

I shoot with the exact same equipment you do. I noticed that my results went up significantly and got more consistant when I selected aperture priority and f/8 for sunshine shots and about two steps bigger hole for clouded ones.

Spot or center measurement was also alot better than the 3d because that often made my planes underexposed because of all the light from the sky. With spot or center I point at the plane, press half way, and then fully at the bip and the image is optimised for the plane, not the sky.

If you can get close enough I would avoid shooting at full tele with the 300 sigma. I've found mine to be a little unsharp when zoomed to much. My best results with the sigma came in the 130-230mm window.

Priceworthy equipment both the sigma and the D70. It's getting a little obsolete perhaps but definately good enough for A.net if you are a decent photoshopper. I'm not yet, but getting closer and closer.

I used to use a D70s and now use D80 's. As others have said, I disable all in camera processing, shoot RAW, centre weighted metering, aperture priority (around f8 - f10), ISO 100 whenever possible and, in bright sun underexpose by -.3 to -.7 stop. This underexposure avoids blowing out the whites that most airliners have these days and is easily allowed for in processing. If the darker clouds come over then I'll go back to 0 exposure compensation but will otherwise use -.3 stop underexposure for bright cloud.

Hi Ketan,

I used to have a D70 and used aperture priority at f8 for fast action and on prop aircraft shutter priority varying the speed from 1/60 to 1/200 to get prop blur. Center weighted metering and on very sunny days -0.3 so they would not burn out the whites. After my first initial experiences using jpg fine I graduated to raw as it is easier to recover any small discrepancies in exposure that I made in the field. Getting the right exposure saves a lot of post processing in the work flow. I now have a D200 and find it much better with exposure and generally a pleasure to use. D70 was a good camera and I had a lot of fun using it and hope you do too with your D70s. Don't be afraid to push the limits and try new things as it is easy to check the results on screen.

Have fun.

Good advice - those were a few things I didn't notice in the settings of my D80.

I'm really learning to use it much better now.  Smile
