Too Much Contrast?

Fri Nov 23, 2007 4:55 pm

Big version: Width: 1280 Height: 960 File size: 850kb

I also am going to make a few more small edits to it, but my main worry is that it may get rejected for contrast. I am hoping it would make it though since this is a rare plane especially for RNO.

Hi, contrast isn't your main problem, your picture is highly overexposed, a real shame because it would be a great photo! If you shot in RAW there might be a small chance to save it, though.

Hope this helps,

Seems overexposed and uncentered. Contrast looks ok to me.

Ok, here it is re-cropped a bit and I think I may have fixed the over-exposure.

One more for good measure:

It is still way to overexposed.. I don't think you can save it at least not if the original is the sameway overexposed.. Did you shoot in RAW?

Cheers
Bjorn

Edit: The second version is much better! (It wasn't there when I posted  Wink )

Bjorn,
The original for the top one is a little overexposed but not by much. I did shoot in RAW and in the programs I use to edit the RAW files I didn't have to use much highlight recovery. The last one I posted is not overexposed at all according to those programs either (using the highlight alert). Let me try editing the top one again.

It played with it a little and tried to make it less overexposed.

Here is a new edit:

1280px:

Also, which crop looks the best? I have one where the whole plane is in the frame, but I think it looks weird. I also kind of like the 2nd one in Reply #3.

Hello Ryan.

I agree the early edits looked much too bright. Things are improving with further edits - for me it is the tail area that needs to have a little bit of detail. In the first edit it was pretty blown out.

As regards cropping - your edits here show an issue often discussed: tailplanes right up against the crop at the top with space below the wheels (as in #2, Reply 3). I much prefer a shot that looks more balanced. For example, in the shots above, the plane still looks to me to be placed too much in the higher right portion of the image, if you see what I mean. I think you need to crop closer there on the left and also get rid of a lot of the 'dead' tarmac below.

All in all I think I prefer #2, Reply 3, if the plane was more vertically centred.

Cheers.

Yea, I wasn't sure how to center shots like these, thanks for the advice, let me try some things and see what I can come up with  Smile

I like the first one of reply 10 best regarding contrast and centering!

But I think it needs a little CCW Rotation and is a little oversharpened.. (for example the end of the tail, the blue stripe, nd a little bit on the top of the fuselage!

Cheers

Maybe a tad too much Rotation, the sharpening is better!

Good luck with it!!
