Photography Forbidden At JFK?

Sun Dec 02, 2007 6:13 am

I was in a camera store today (in California) and they told me that any kind of photography at NYC airports is now forbidden (due to post 9/11 insanity).

I was skeptical... is this really true?

Uh, no it isn't. FYI, have a look at http://www.nycaviation.com.

I also invite you to do a search on Airliners.net in the photography section for "JFK" and see just how "illegal" it is (i.e. over 10,400 photos taken at JFK).

On an aside, I find it funny that people think photography is somehow "illegal" or banned due to "post-9/11 security regulations" when in fact that isn't the case. Further, it's equally humorous that people feel this way considering aviation photography had absolutely NOTHING to do with 9/11 in the first place.  banghead

I've seen numerous trip reports in JFK even recently as well.

I completely agree with you, that's why I called it post-9/11 insanity. It has nothing to do with rationality.

I know that photography was banned for some time in NYC subways, but I think the ban was lifted.

No, it never was. The MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) who run the subways, proposed such a regulation, and although the police incorrectly began enforcing it, the rules were never adopted and the proposal dropped. It is, and always has been, perfectly legal to photograph in the NYC subways.

As to photography at JFK - there is no blanket prohibition "since 9/11". In fact, most of the time that doesn't come up with our encounters with law enforcement. Certainly, there are sensitive areas, some areas that are not public property, and areas that will get added scrutiny from the police. As Flynavy noted, check out www.nycaviation.com for detailed descriptions of prime spotting locations in and around JFK, as well as helpful information about spotting in the area.

Always have ID with you, always be respectful to police that may question you - 99% of the time, they are responding to a call and are professional and respectful if you are the same. Know your rights, know the law, and don't be afraid to politely assert your rights, but ultimately, if asked to move along, do so and deal with it afterwards.

And if you do head out to NYC, please drop us a line at NYCAviation.com, someone will almost always look to meet up with you. You don't want to miss out on something like this:

Moose135 - does your offer regarding contacting NYC Aviation.com extend to European photographers who could do with a change of scenery? T.

Absolutely - we've had a number of European spotters over this way, in fact just this summer, Florian from this site was in town, and a bunch of us were out spotting with him, as well as a few spotters from Great Britain.

Is the Port Authority ban on photographs on their property (N.J. Transit) still in effect?

Moose 135. Excellent. Mother (or Mom in the USA  Wink) wishes to visit the Big Apple in the New Year. Needless to say, I'd rather do aircraft photography! Nice shot of the Cathay A340 by the way. T.

Apparently so for the PATH system - I wasn't aware of it, but according to this site:
http://www.panynj.gov/CommutingTravel/path/html/pop_regulations.html

Quote:
IX. Photography and similar activity.
A. The taking or making of photographs of any portion of the PATH system is prohibited except as provided herein.

It goes on to detail requirements including the need for a permit, and a PATH representative escort. PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson system) is different from NJ Transit. NJ Transit does allow non-commercial photography.

Here's a good site which summarizes photography rules for many US rail systems:
http://www.nycsubway.org/faq/photopermits.html

Great! Post a note on the NYCA forum, and drop me a line as well. Hope to see you out one day soon.

Chances are you will be approached by some type of official,NYPD,PORT AUTHORITY Police, they are pretty good about pix,... be ready to produce Picture ID...BE COURTEOUS and don't travel in photographer gaggle...travel alone, you should be fine. If your on rooftops of parking garage they have some cheap security agency that forbids everyhting...even breathing,...they are usually chicky drivers and they yell at you with one hand while the other is holding their personal cell phone calls!...good luck...j
