Help With 2 Rejections (+ Cryptic Rejection Msg!)

Tue Dec 11, 2007 2:23 am

Hi all,

I have to say I was a little bit disappointed with these two getting rejected.

The first one:

http://www.airliners.net/procphotos/...ilename=20071210_tonys-pix-136.jpg

got QUALITY and DARK. Quality-wise, I used the same camera / lens / workflow combination that I used for my last 15 acceptances. And I can't see how it is dark. The shot was taken as the sun was about to hit the clouds, so if I brighten it up I think it will lose some of its character. Anyway, I was surprised as I was expecting MOTIV for this one.

The second one:

http://www.airliners.net/procphotos/...ilename=20071210_tonys-pix-135.jpg

only had PERSONAL as the rejection reason (I ain't kidding!!!) and the personal messages was "and dark" (yes, I really ain't kidding!!!). So, if the screener who rejected it is reading this, I'd very much appreciate a bit more feedback. Level maybe?

Thanks in advance,

Tony

I quite like the contrast between the trailing edge and the rest of the wing in that first shot, but it is just slightly on the dark side. Some levels adjustment will fix it up: just lighten the highlights and midtones while moving the shadows slider to the right to taste, to preserve the nice contrast.

The second photo is definitely dark; the shadows are clipped. I recommend having a look at your histograms, as stuff like this will become quite clear. Again, judicious levels adjustment will fix it up. Watch the jaggies in the middle of the frame, too.

Cheers,
Gabriel

Tony,

The "and dark" comment was meant as an internal comment, not sure how it got rejected. I was the screener who left this comment, which was in addition to other comments left in screening which were about the shot being level and the cabin crew.

In my opinion the photo was not dark enough for an outright rejection, but in combination with the flaws another screener saw it should have had other eyes on it.

Not sure if you should appeal it, but if you want to readd it to the queue I can get it back in screening for you.

I did not screen the first photo so I will not comment on that, hopefully the screener(s) involved in that rejection will read this and comment.

Even though motive of this shot might be a little bit uninteresting, I personally really love the colors and this is why I submitted it. But I'm just wondering why it got QUALITY.

Ah, I had missed those. Easy fix. Thanks,

Hey Royal, thanks for the note. No, I won't appeal. OK, so it's a little dark (I'll brighten it up a bit), level (maybe a tad CW?), and the crew. Well, nothing I can do about the crew, but (i) you cannot see their faces and (ii) I have seen many pictures in the DB in which the crew is visible (I even have one myself). And, FWIW, I think they add to the motive of the picture (given that they are in the process of doing what the crew does). I'll resubmit it when I get some time to edit it.

...but you are more than welcome to share your thoughts on it.  Smile
