Image Too Large

Thu Dec 13, 2007 4:49 pm

I am using Photoshop Elements 5.0 to edit my photos, and resize them to a proportional width of 1280 pixels. After editing the photo, I save the file using a quality of 10 in the JPEG saving options. The file size is stil quite a bit above 1 megs.

Is this normal? I am seeing photos on Airliners that are bigger than 1280, so those must be less than 1 megs, correct?

Thank you!

I would resize down to 1024. This will not only reduce the size to less than 1 meg, but it might also help with the quality of the image.

if the quality is there, 1280px are ok imo.
I would use the "save for web" function which allows you to reduce the file size in very small steps to 1MB.

It is not just the dimensions of the image that affects the overall KB/MB size - it is notable how much the actual content of the image will impact on overall file size. For example, the size of an image of an aircraft against a blank blue sky will be a lot less that that same aircraft, photographed on the ground with a lot of building/environment detail in the background, edited to the same pixel dimensions. In essence - less 'information' in the former; more in the latter.

You do need to ensure that the file size is no larger than 1 MB when uploading. Given the quality standards here, I would try to maximise the quality when saving an edit and, if necessary, reduce the image size. In that sense I agree with Michael above.

All the best.

Sharpening has quite an impact on image size. Try not to sharpen the background.

I would resize the image to 1024 pixels. Personally, I never upload greater than 1024 pixels wide. This not only keeps the file size down, but also for copyright resons. The lower the pixel count, the less chance of your photo's being used for unauthorised printing.

My advice would be to keep the size down to 1024 as well. Possible theft being the main reason. Anything above 1024 is going to be very useable.
