Thu Jan 03, 2008 8:50 pm

I am looking at these two lenses right now....

EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM and the 70-200 f4 L for my Rebel 300D...

also any comments on converters would be nice to.

Using it for aviation but also portrait and fashion.....the price is real close.....what would you do????

what would you do????

My brother owns a 70-200 f4L and he is very satisfied with it, I'd go for L-glass.

I would buy only L-Lenses!

I also use the 70-200 f/4 L and in my opinion it is much better than the 70-300.
What do you think about the 70-200 f/2.8? You can use this lens with a converter and
then you have nearly the 100-400  Smile

That 70-300IS produces some very nice Images.
Do you need 300mm reach?
If you don't go with the L lens.
Stay away from 2x teleconverters, they degrade image quality.

I've got a 70-200 F4 L and it's great. Try reading this thread:

has the 70-300 IS USM just been revealed in all parts of the world or why is this the third thread about this lens in the last three weeks?

The 70-200 f4 might be of better quality but the 70-300 has more range with goo but not L quality - whatevery you need.

georg

P.S.: I love my 70-300

If you can afford it, L without a doubt. Once you pop the L you can't stop! I've got the F2.8 IS version but from what i've read and seen the F4 versions are extremely capable. In addition they are built solid.

I use the Canon 1.4x and it is very good. Very little quality is lost and certainly nothing that I notice under day to day use. In fact the 1.4x lives permanently attached to my lens. I've got the 2x as well and unfortunately it can't match it's little brother's capabilities.

Hi Randall,

check the following link - test report of Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L. I think you will be confident to go for L lens then.

http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/canon_70200_4/index.htm

Or you can check report of Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L IS which seems to be even better.

do 100mm in focal length really make a difference?????
If I were you I would go with L.......

these photo actually compare the 500f4 and 600f4.....in terms of focal length, but since they are just 100mm apart you get an idea what you are missing or gaining!

That's a bit deceptive, because going from 500 to 600 is just a 20% increase, whereas 200 to 300 would be a 50% increase (imagine you'd compare - for the sake of the argument - a 1mm lens to a 101mm lens, that'd be a massive difference, still only 100mm difference)
I scratch my head, therefore I am.

you are right, this info was a bit misleading........

this should do it

Big version: Width: 512 Height: 327 File size: 90kb
200mm

Big version: Width: 508 Height: 327 File size: 93kb
300mm

I have been reading this thread with interest and am wondering if you made a decision as to which lens to buy? I am faced with the same question hence the interest on my part.

You have been given good advice and the reference to the thread Need Help on Canon 70-300mm IS USM by Mnazarinia Dec. 19 2007 should have been helpful as I know it was to me.

What was wonderful to read was the excellent advice provided to the young man from Australia by members of the forum namely Jim-GPHOTO, Karl- JakTrax and Paul - Psych. It was one of the best examples of the Forum working for the betterment of the hobby. Thank you gentlemen.

All of this said even though we are driving Jorge 1812 nuts. Please hang in there with us Jorge it will all change as soon as Canon introduces a new lens.

I have just made up my mind as to what lens to upgrade too and am now to finesse it with the wife.

Hi Gulfstream,

Yep, I do really appreciate all the tips, times and advices from all you mentioned above. It was fantastic. BTW, based on their advices I purchased 70-200 f/4 L USM and am really happy about what I have done so far.

Cheers,
Mehdi.
