How Level Does Level Have To Be..?

Thu Jan 10, 2008 4:46 pm

Following image rejected for level, appealed it and still rejected for level;

I had levelled it using the left most vertical part of the hanger, any ideas?

Cheers,
Ian.

Hello Ian.

I hope things are well with you (other than this rejection!).

You have a very awkward situation here. I assume that the screeners/Head Screeners felt that the shot overall needs CCW rotation. Did you get any comments to this efect from either screening process?

You have my sympathy with regard to those verticals on the left hand side, but my guess is that they felt that, whilst they may look vertical here, the overall effect of the photo is that it leans to the right - almost like the helicopter itself is going to slide down towards the grass. This is exacerbated by the look of the buildings on the far right.

I might be tempted to apply some CCW rotation, which will cause those drainpipes on the left to lean slightly, but explain in the comment that you can only assume that the screeners are looking for a more general level feel and will therefore tolerate how that looks. The only alternative would be to 'bend' the photo in editing, but I am sure that would not be countenanced by the site.

All the best.

Hello Ian!

Have to agree with Paul here, it is one of the hard images. I just had a look with PS at it and the verticals seemed to be all already leaning a little bit to the left, while the over all appearance is that it still needs some CCW...

But I have to say I agree with the screeners, it looks to unlevel to me...

This is one of the shots I would stick with making it look right, even though the verticals tell something different and afterwards leave a comment to the screeners for why you leveled it this way...

Hope this helps!

Cheers

The buildings on the left edge should be leaning to the left by the same amount as the buildings on the right edge should be leaning to the right. Carefully use the ruler tool on the original and you should be able to work it out.
