Organizing/Storing Photos

Thu Jan 10, 2008 6:14 pm

Hi!

I know, this topic had been discussed here a couple of times, but all of the topics are quite outdated, so let me start a new one.

What are your techniques for keeping photos? Do you put them in any DB? Do you have one DB for originals and one for edits? And such questions.

The more details you provide about your system, the better.

Thanks for replies.

Regards, Keishi

Lightroom organizes all my photos. The edited versions tend to take up space (and it's really only sharpened edits) so I delete the high res PSDs after a while and keep the finished JPEGs. I can always resharpen the image if I need it later.

I'm starting to get ready to back up all my 2007 images to DVD and start cleaning up hard disks. That's a project for a cloudy weekend...

Another lightroom user here. In the next couple of days I'll try and get a 'walkthrough' of my workflow online.

After downloading the photos from my camera I archive the original images in a zip file and then process the un-archived copy of the images. I use a 500 gig external hardrive for storage (relatively inexepensive and easier for mass storage than DVDs or CDs.)

Keishi,

I save all my originals in separate folders by date. Folder 2007 sub folder month sub folder by date and maybe if something of interest I will add teh airfield designator. I do the same with processed images, keeping the file name which includes the date, reg and airfield for example: 9V-JEA_EGCC_jid_20071213_5174.jpg
This way I can search by date, airfield and reg. Everything is backed to a 500gig external HD (less the £70 now).

I am considering Lightroom too, but I would be happier with something DB based. Anyone else with reply?

I back up my originals only (i.e. the unedited pic's as they came out of the camera), to either CD or DVD (depending what discs I have at the time). I never back up edits.

I back up a few times in the year on DVD or CD before making my year-end backups: one on CD, one on DVD, and one also stays on the computer. I backup originals as well as edited versions.
