What's Wrong With My Photo?

Thu Jan 17, 2008 6:25 pm

This photo I took was recently rejected... along with other few along the last 5 years...
I had given up uploading... but I'm curious... maybe it's me...

Hey SPO1L3R,

The aircraft is too far away, not correctly centred and blurry. There is also a reddish colour cast. Also, the motive is questionable, as it is taken from a disadvantageous angle.

In future, practice, get closer to your subject, and work on your editing - that's a good formula for success here on a.net.

All the best,

Toni

My guess would be a 'centered' and/or 'distance' rejections.

Thanks guys.
I don't 'get it'.... 'closer'? Do you mean my point of shooting to be closer to the plane, or do you mean, crop the photo.
Like this one? http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/1667/12jan200807h58m12snikonol9.jpg

I've got few problems here: I cannot get any closer [restrictions] that's why the angle is such... the lens i'm using is a 200-400 and the shot was taken at 220mm.
Thanks

No, something like this would make more sense.

You could have zoomed in more, or now that it's too late, you can crop it like so.

I can only guess that you're talking about the Nikon 200-400 VR. If that's the case I'm sure you can be able to figure something out that works.

Thanks...

I tough that cropped photos were not allowed...
What about the second photo? Would they accept it? It's not a crop, it's a full zoom at 400mm.

Yes the lens is a Nikkor 200-400mm VR f/4

Thanks

Cropping is very much allowed, so are exposure, contrast and color correction, cloning dust spots, etc.

You know, I'm sorry but that's just a plain ugly crop of that image. The CG of the aircraft and the center of mass visually is far to the right and photographically it makes the entire frame look unbalanced.

Personally I find this a much more estetically pleasing image in terms of crop. It's pleasing to the eye, balanced and the aircraft has room to breathe in the frame. Not that damn squished look that has become so prevalent here.

Just as a note. I'm FAR MORE LIKELY to open and view the second image, rather than the first for the reasons stated.

IMHO

Yes Steve, but we're still talking about uploading to this site.

You are very unlikely to find such a crop on A.net.

Most likely if any mag its eager to publish your picture, they will go for the 1st rather than the 2nd one.

Well! This is a totally different ball game: better motive, good crop, sharper. This one could, with the right editing, and assuming the RAW is good, easily make it into the database!

Actually not. As a former newspaper and magazine photo editor and photographer, my choice has always been for good composition vs the make-it-fit approach to photo selection. One crops for visual impact, not space requirements. However of the photos presented in this thread, and if I was illustrating a story on the A380, I'd go in order of 1) the image in reply #3, then 2) my selected crop, and in last place, the A.net crop.

While A.net does have it's "standards" and rejection reasons, I'll never stop hoping that good photographic composition doesn't fall by the wayside to those standards.

Ok i do see your point, and totally true a double page article print must have a nice image with bigger space around, it all depends on final usage, i too have worked for 2 years in MEX's local newspaper and I totally see your point, but there has to be some standardization and some rules to follow here. If you change your mind and decide to correct your pictures, your photos are always welcome to be re-uploaded!

First photo looks beautiful to me. It's not claustrophobic like many on here. There's breathing space. That's a photo that I'd frame.

Great job.
