Camera, D80 Or Canon 350D

Mon Jan 21, 2008 4:25 pm

Well, what a turn of events....

What camera would you recommend?
Come from a Nikon D50 with the 18-55mm and 70-300mm lens and looking at upgrading.
Im thinking the D80 as the lens will still fit etc and i would have the added expense of buying new lens.

From what ive heard its a heck of a good unit.

Thoughts?

If you have a Nikon already, you might want to stick with it so you can use your lenses. It may also be compatible with other things from the D50 (such as your memory card  Wink)

Aren't D50s SD memory and D80s CF?

Anyway, point is stick with Nikon, because it's more financially viable. The D80 is the ideal next step from a D50 so your research has been good!

I'm a Canon owner but I wouldn't say it would be worth replacing your D50 with a 350D, as the jump just isn't big enough. Even opting for the 400D isn't an enormous leap forward. The D80 supposedly is a very capable camera - somewhere in between the 350/400D and the 30D.

What's wrong with your D50? As has been said here a million times, BUY GOOD GLASS!!!! The D50 is a great camera, invest in some quality lenses, you won't regret it and your pics will show the difference!!

While better glass is always good, the D80 would be an upgrade in the sense that you can shoot in continuous mode longer, has better AF performance, has a much better viewfinder (prism, not mirror)...

But Nikon is probably prepping a D90, I would wait until after the PMA announcements before buying anything.

Good argument here. Look at Dave Budd's pics. What that guy does with a D50 and a good lens and skill is amazing.

Good advice.

My bad, I thought it was CF, thought the 50 was it with that.

I'm no Nikonian so I had no idea whether they share the same card. I was rather hinting at the fact that David is still waiting for his memory card to come back from the AAIB (aren't you?)

would the lens: Sigma 170-500mm f5-6.3 APO (Nikon AF) be advisable (£560) or can anyone recommend a better one

Even if they were, IMHO, the low cost of memory these days means that memory format shouldn't factor in to a decision about which camera to upgrade to.

Might as well just go all the way and get the Bigma (50-500), better built, better image quality, better glass all around.

David,

I would recommend getting to know your current camera better first, and build up your photography skills on that. Investing in a 50-500mm Sigma would better suit you and help you improve more. The lens that you currently have (and that I used to use) isn't the best lens in the world!

I think you'd improve more with the new lens, than a new camera.  Smile

Just my 2cents.
