I have 4 images taken of the same scene in low-light conditions with a DSLR. To reduce noise, I want to average all of the images to get a single output image.
If I import the 4 images as layers into a single work space, I can set the opacities of the layers as follows, from top to bottom:
image 4 (layer opacity: 25%)
image 3 (layer opacity: 33.33%)
image 2 (layer opacity: 50%)
image 1 (Background layer)
Is there a simpler way to do this? Isn't there an "Average" mode for layer blending?

This is NOT allowed by A.net rules. Any image submitted to A.net must be a single exposure on either a single frame of film, or a single exposure on a digital camera. You cannot combine multiple images which make it a composite image.

Of course, this doesn't make sense for much aviation photography anyway (unless shooting static aircraft at night I suppose).

I haven't tried something like that in PS - I use either Image Stacker for multiple layers or Photomatrix for HDR work.

One way to do what you want is to use layer masks and creating masks for each layer to filter out either the over exposed of under exposed areas. There are loads of ways of doing what you want it all depends on what your separate layers are like.
You can also try the HDR function in PS as this works in similar ways .. but of course both methods are banned at this site.
