Nightspotting LAX/PHX?

Mon Feb 04, 2008 7:54 pm

Hello!

One more thread concerning my US trip, I decided to create new thread as it is new question and also some other users might find it useful.

So, how is nightspotting at LAX and PHX? Are these photos taken from public areas? If yes, where are they from and how can I get there?

It appears the PHX shots are taken from the parking garage, which is the best place to spot in PHX in my opinion anyway, and its really easy to get to... as its literally on top of the terminal.

Hi Keishi,

Three options on the LAX pictures above. They’re either from the western parking garages adjacent to the Bradley terminal, from the sidewalks between Bradley and terminals 3 and 4, or from inside Bradley itself. I've never tired shooting from any of the above, so i cant narrow it down. Someone else here might be able to give you a more definitive answer. From the top level of the Bradley terminal, you’re able to get decent looks at the alleyways for both wings of the terminal building, as well as an Alaska or American plane every now and then. Ditto from inside Bradley. From the sidwalk, you can take close up shots like the one below.

Send me an email if you get a chance, and I might be able to give you some help while you’re here.

Sorry to ask, but if those places (in LAX) are good for night photography...why don't we see photos made during the day from those places? Are those places backlight during the day?
Thanks.
Oh...Keishi...that sounds like a real spotting trip...day and night non stop

Quoting Mclaudio (Reply 3):

I think it has more to do with the fact that you cant get as much variety of aircraft from those locations. From In-N-Out for example, you're seeing a different plane landing every minute or two for runway 24R, traffic that is bound for any of the multiple terminals at LAX. When you're on the sidewalk outside Bradley, you're pretty much limited to whatever is parked at the gates or is taxiing in and out of the alley's. You're probably looking at anywhere from a half hour to an hour for a change from one of the gates to occur. Unless you're looking for a very specific shot, like the night one's shown above, its not as good a use of a spotters time.

I can't comment on LAX, but it you're looking at the north side of TBIT the light is pretty good I guess. It would be something similar to (selfplug)

PHX is a great airport for nightshots. It's mainly in the parking garage at T4 and will give you US and WN. It get's a bit repetitive but you can have some great shots there.

If you are really going for nightshots IAH probably would be the place to visit. It's on the parkinggarages as well and can give you some amazing shots. I've been there twice now and I'm certainly going to be back. That place rocks!!

IAH, no problems whatsoever if you call security first. Check houstonspotters.net for more info.
PHX, no trouble either
LAX seems to be a bit hit or miss, but I can't really comment on that as I haven't done that.
