Spotting In London-Stansted

Tue Mar 04, 2008 10:50 am

Hi everybody,

I will now study for one semester in the UK. I saw that there is a pretty good connection by bus/train from my town to the Stansted airport.
Can anybody give my some information about spotting in Stansted? Best places for spotting and how to get to the places without having a car.

Thank you very much for your help!

STN is not bad for spotting. I used to live in Bishops Stortford.

You can sit on the grassy knoll outside the departures terminal and you get a decent view over the terminal roof and the monorail, but you'll be properly big time sick of Ryanair 737s after an hour. I believe their DREAMLINER liveried 738 is based there although I've never seen it personally, so if you are the spottery type who looks out for these things then its something to look forward to i guess. 90% of it is Ryanair or Easyjet A319s. Norwegian and Germanwings send 733s and A319s, and Air Berlin send A320s, 73Gs, and I've seen their F100 there once too. Are Wizzair still operating? If so you'll see their rather fetching purple A320s, and that Czech LoCo i can never remember the name of send 737s too. There are the odd charter bird, mainly A320s, from Monarch, First Choice and I think Thomsonfly as well. You see the odd Aer Arran ATR as well.

Interesting stuff is generally cargo - UPS 767s, FedEx MD11s are the highlight, although the EOS and El Al 752s and AA 763ER make a welcome change from the drudgery. There are always the wetleased 744Fs that BA Cargo use on the cargo ramp, and i've seen Korean Air Cargo 747s there too. TNT send the 733QC I think.

There was talk of PIA sending A310s to STN this Summer, and AA going double daily, so probably they'll bring the 757 for that.
What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

Don't forget the sheer excitement of an Eastern Airways J31/41!

There are some nice approach shots in the database, mail one of the photog's as I'll bet you can probably walk to the spots.

Lots of FR and U2, to be expected, but there should be plenty going on to keep you interested for the day. Whizzair moved to LTN recently but PIA do indeed bring in an A310. CO 757s too, plus some strange freight stuff worth looking out for.

That Czech LoCo you mention will be Smart Wings. Although you'd have to be crazy to use them! Their reputation is not the best, and thats being kind to them!
If you can find a way round to the old terminal which is now used for Biz/vip flights you'll find some interesting aircraft there. If I remember correctly the long term car park is about a 5 min walk from the old terminal, so you could get on the courtesy bus from the terminal to the car park then walk the last bit?  Wink

I was at STN on the 18th March & there was a WizzAir flight in! Although most of their flights do operate from LTN.

Haven't AA given-up on 757's across the pond? Do they still fly any to Europe?

They used to send a 757 on the MAN-BOS route but that got axed last October, which by the looks of it, for good.  Sad Unless I missed something?

I don't think so - checking aa.com, only AA55 operates MAN-ORD on a 767-300ER. I do recall that AA757's did operate to MAN, but don't recall when, although it was recently. There doesn't appear to be any AA service to SNN and only a 763 from ORD to DUB. So it does look as though AA has stopped 757 service across the Atlantic, unless anyone knows any different?
