Sigma Lens For My 350D

Sat Aug 02, 2008 3:00 pm

Hi guys
Can anyone give me a bit of advice on this one.I am looking to buy a sigma lens for my canon 350D.
I am looking at either an 80-400 or a 120-400 lens.
I saw a post on some website saying that there are a couple of canon cameras that are not suitable to a sigma lens.Wether this is true...i dont know. The site i have seen the lenses on i want, have not replied to my few emails about this.
So i am looking for any advice going.
Cheers
Andy

Hi, Andy.

I bought the Sigma 135-400 for my Olympus and I love it. It's plenty fast in good light, and although it's heavy, you can easily hold it by hand for a few hours of shooting, though I usually use it with a monopod anyway.

Older Sigma lenses seem to be especially prone to compatibility issues with newer Canon bodies. If the lens is still in production it can usually be upgraded by Sigma. If the lens is out of production you're SOL.

However, you shouldn't have any problems if the lens you intend to purchase was manufactured after the 350D was released. I've used 3 Sigma lenses on my 350D without incident (70-300, 10-20 and 18-50).

Of course, if you upgrade your camera body in the future you could run into problems.

Quoting Ppcd (Reply 3):

I will second the 17-70mm F/2.8 on the Rebel XT (350D).

It provides great range so you don't have to half a ramp away. I use it as my walk around lens.

That's all well and good but the OP specifically asked about telephoto zooms, not wide-angle, haha.

Andy, I double-checked, and the Sigma 135-400 I mentioned should work no problem with your camera.

Hi Andy, I've just bought the new 120-400 OS HSM for my 350D, I need some practice to take decent pictures with this kind of range but it seems to be a very nice lens... The 80-400 is a bit old and has no OS or HSM (if I'm not mistaken).
