Usage Help

Mon Aug 11, 2008 2:21 pm

Hello everyone,

I have just received my first usage request.

It is for this photo,

possibly along with some others out of my own collection they would like to see.

The requester is a daily newspaper in Europe with circulation of 500,000. They are preparing a feature article.

Any ideas? I want to be fair to them and myself without being greedy.

Congrats on the request!

Newspapers / magazines usually have fixed rates they pay everyone for image usage, I don't think you have a lot of room for negotiations.

Their rate usually depends on placement (lead photo, maybe even cover etc..) and size, so the best thing to do would be ask which size they intend to print the photo in. This can be from spot to quarter page, half page of full spread.

Ask them for their standard rate, I think that would be the most reasonable thing to do.

Well done.

As a poor second option to what Florian is suggesting, you can register with stock photo agencies like www.alamy.com or www.gettyimages.com - only takes a moment - and look up photos that are rights managed/licenced (as opposed to royalty free) to see what fee they would charge for a similar use.

I say it's a poor second option because an established buyer which provides a lot of repeat business to a stock photo agency would not necessarily pay the website fee. It could benefit from a pretty huge discount factor. But at least you would get a sense of the upper limit of what you can charge.

Thank you very much Florian and Charles!

I will investigate both those avenues.

Cheers
