Photography With An EasyShare Z712?

Sat Aug 23, 2008 7:09 am

Okay, so I've been using a Kodak EasyShare Z712 IS for around a year (since last Christmas)... I guess you'd call ita semi-professional camera, somewhere in between a point-and-shoot and a DSLR.

Now while I enjoy using this camera, and it takes wonderful pictures for general viewing and prints up to around 8x10 using the various automatic modes, I'm not happy with the results I'm getting when quality is critical (i.e: my "good shots" have never survived a screening on A.net).

This picture, for example, I thought was good (and was submitted completely unedited except for resize, but it was rejected for, IIRC, level (which I understand), quality, and oversharpness.

Is the problem simply that my camera doesn't have the ability to take such sharp pictures as a DSLR can, or is there something I can do to make my pictures higher quality (either with my camera or in post-processing (I use Paint Shop Pro for all my graphics work, if that helps)

Try to keep your photos no bigger than 1024 pixels wide when uploading them. The bigger the photo the easier it is to spot flaws.

Shoot at the lowest ISO setting your camera will allow; avoid the 'auto' or 'programme' modes; do not use digital zoom.

Whoa, steady on! It's a consumer range point-and-shoot. Even entry-level DSLRs can't really be described as semi-pro.

It will never take as good a quality image as a DSLR, but it will allow you to get pic's on here, provided you a) follow Viv's advice and b) carefully perform the necessary editing, preferably in Photoshop.

Thanks for all the replies!

Looks like it's time for me to learn how to REALLY use my camera then!

Quoting JakTrax (Reply 3):

Haha, many appologies for that then!
