Creative Images, A Week After

Wed Sep 03, 2008 8:43 am

It has been more than a week since Gary's announcement about the new creative rule and the pictures are starting to get in. Looking back at the shots accepted (I presume) under the new rule) I think it has been a good decision. Let's have a look:

Some might not like all shots above, and some might not fall into the new category, but the direction is clear. Although Tim's first shot was much debated, some amazing photo's are now entering the database! Another observation I made looking for these shots is that they all had relatively high view numbers so obviously they are popular!

Yes we've seen some very good images, I'm sure there are more in the queue.

particularly the corfu one and gerard's shot are examples of what is possible now, we need some more radical stuff!

Yes we've seen some very good images,

That is true.

but I must say some users are not happy about this rule. They are frustrated why their picture doesn't fall under the new creative rule and others do. I am sure you headscreeners and screeners received a lot of emails about it.
I know it is hard to judge and to decide if a pic is creative or not. Problem with it is: some people think a shot is creative, others don't.
And I am sure this problem will be seen in the future as well.
I have a shot rejected as well. I think it got to the headscreeners because it might be a creative shot. But then it got rejected for 4 different "normal" reasons.
Does this mean it is just bad or is it not applying for the creative rule?

I hope we see some awesome shots here in the future. Some are really good.

Because lots of people think the tag "creative" can be applied to any photograph, just because it is different (read: maybe lower quality, or technically flawed).

Anyway, lets stay on topic:

More perfectly fine examples of the rule:

I put 4 shots in the queue and marked them as "Creative" but 3 were rejected for normal reason, which I don't have a problem with as once pointed out to me the quality was not there!
I guess photos even creative ones still need to be high quality?
I just glad one did get in! Thanks for the plug Jurgen  Wink
Lets hope we see many more shots!

Hi Guys

Yes creative shots need to be of high quality, with leniency for really difficult shots.

Also, there is no special screening process for "creative" shots and putting "creative" in the comments isn't going to give it special treatment.

We basically screen as normal. When we pick up on something different or "creative" the shot will be discussed by several screeners on artistic and technical merit and most likely in the end the headscreeners.

All shots including "creative" ones will be rejected for the regular reasons. Motive will be given if the shot doesnt fit our "creative" standards (which we are still developing)

I think the above are some good examples of what is possible. I'm sure many rejections will also show what is not possible. Yes there will be perceived inconsistencies and what we allow is what we as screeners like but there's no other way around it. We've taken a risky step and I think it's paying off. We knew there would be some inevitable frustrations from people who think their creative attempt deserve a place on a.net but were rejected.

And I think that is the thing some user get frustrated about. Their picutes will be screened by personal measures from the screeners and not by "real" rules as it is done without the creative rule.
Of course, there is no other way at the moment.

Wow, I missed that one. That's one of the coolest shots I've seen in a long time.

I don't think there's ever been a more exciting time to check the daily additions to the database.

I think some of the shots are amazing (although correct me if I'm wrong but a few of the above would have been acceted regardless of creative?). I'm still disturbed by a few points regarding the new rule, especially because of the inconsisitencies that we will see, which are a logic effect of the new rule, since creativity is subjective to whoever is looking at it and I'm afraid it's going to be tough to have all screeners think the same about some of these shots. I guess we'll have to wait and see, but as I said, some of these shots are truly amazing and are a treat to watch Big grin

This is in my opinion one of the biggest steps forward for Anet since I have been a member.. or longer. Some great work surfacing and looking forward to more.

Quoting TimdeGroot (Reply 6):
"creative" standards (which we are still developing)

Not sure how you achieve that, like to think you won't try too hard, that will only defeat the purpose.

Quoting WILCO737 (Reply 7):

I think as long as feedback by the community on the accepted images stays constructive and some share their rejections in a constructive way there will always be a guide for the screening team that they are on the right track(or not).

Cheers

Nice shots. However I think the second one is not so much creative as it is absolutely stunning in terms of visible effects.

Sorry, but one of the shots presented in this thread wouldn't be accepted even as 'standard'. Nevertheless creative has a future.

Some excellent images are appearing online; it's brilliant to see Airliners.net growing!

Am I correct in saying that under certain circumstances that Black & White images are now allowed on Airliners.net. If they work well with the image?

Hey guys,

Well I had my first creative accepted today.....

http://www.airliners.net/photo/Ameri...lines/Boeing-767-323-ER/1390544/M/

I felt very uneasy about it as no official rules have yet been written with regard to creatives. I guess you have to go with your instincts.

Anyway, this new criteria has made me want to be more creative and I shall continue to look for new and different opportunities.

Congrat's to the team for evolving the site further.

Gonna be a bit of a wet blanket here...
I am seeing lots of images that would not have made Anet in the past due to infractions of various rules such as motiv, distance etc but many of them hardly qualify as creative.

Ramp shots of mx being performed, sure it would likely have been rejected in the past but creative.. I think not.

Having said this I think Anet has made a great leap forward.

I remember the days where I wasn't a photographer and checked a.net.

There are the shots the non-photographers LOVE to see. The Quality has not been changed, and the motives get more and more interesting.

There is more "aviation" being exposed. You dont just ONLY see some random Air Berlin/Southwest jet landing in plain blue sky. In the past when I saw all the photos that the PROFESSIONAL Aviation photographers over at Fredmiranda.com make, I felt that A.net was missing a creative edge. Well not anymore. (Pro Photog is as in you make a living of it, for example Jim Wilson)
