About Photography At Samedan, Switzerland

Fri Oct 03, 2008 10:30 am

Hello friends and I hope to know something about spotting at Samedan Airport, Switzerland.

I'm planning to go there in the near future and wish to know:

1. Are there many flights there at the weekend? If yes, how frequent?

2. Could you please recommend some sites for taking pictures? And how to get there? I have a Canon 20D with 17-85mm, and 70-300mm lenses.

3. Is there any special rule (eg. security) that I should pay attention to at the airport?

Thank you very much and hope to see some replies soon.

All the best

YU Ming

Thanks a lot for the information. It's raining / snowing in most of Switzerland today, but weather forecast says it will turn better tomorrow. Hope I have a good luck when getting there Smile

Aaah, Samedan, my fav place...

1st of all re traffic-amount: On busy weekend-days you can get 40 or so bizjets up to Global Express-Size, but most of them Citations, Hawkers and Falcons and on others none at all. SMV is still strictly VFR, so when the weather is bad, the place will be shut. Sometimes, even BBJ's visit, but don't count on it.

Busiest weekends are IMHO the White Turf-weekends. Thats when the rich and famous meet on the frozen lake at St.Moritz to see the horse-races, and more importantly, each other... www.whiteturf.ch

The most popuar place is right next to the terminal... Fences are (For now) non-existent and it will be easy to fnd vantage spots all around the airport, just walk...

Security is not a problem and spotters are well known... there are dozens on busy sunny days.... Just remember that you mix with the rich and famous and some of them don't like to be fotographed all the time, just focus on the planes and avoid to photograph people. The lenses you quoted will be fine btw

In closing, for somebody like you to come from so far, the only risk is to be there on bad weather days.. we here can follow the weather forecasts and I sometimes wait until the evening before to decide if I make the 4-hour-road trip...

I'll gladly help if there are any other questions...

Perfect information. Thanks a lot! lol
