Canon 100-400 Lens Questions.

Sun Oct 19, 2008 7:37 pm

I have bee nworking my a$$ off lately at my job and the paychecks show it. And I soon might want to get the Canon 100-400 IS lens for my Xsi.

Can anyone tell me what the "L" series or "L" lens is and is it different from other versions of this lens. Also where to buy and if its only available from online dealers, is the shipping safe and insured? Any info would help a lot!!

L is Canon's luxury line of lenses. They are superb in quality, both build and image. They cost more, but they are the best lenses you can get. They are classified by a small red ring around the very end of the lens, near the glass, a common mistake is that they are only the "white" lenses. False, canon does make a few L lenses that are black, with the red ring, but the majority are white.

There is really not much else to say, they provide the best image and build quality than any other lens series.

Always do your research before buying a lens at this price - do you really need it? Can you justify the cost? Do you shoot over long distances regularly?

The 100-400L is generally considered to be one of the best lenses for aviation photography, and being in the 'L' line you are assured of the finest quality. However you should look at other lenses in the 'L' series. Another very good aviation lens is the 70-200 F4 L, which is nearly half the price of the 100-400 but has identical optics. Then of course there are the 'Bigmas' (Sigma's super-telephoto range, renowned for their size), which are also worth a look.

I've been renting one since June and I absolutely love it! It's great for aviation photography and it's been superb for my sports photography. I highly recommend it.

Check here instead: www.lensrentals.com. It costs about $179.00 per month (with insurance) to rent and they ship it FedEx 2-day and give you a return label as well. These people are really great to deal with.
