Madeira Spotting - FNC

Sun Dec 07, 2008 10:52 pm

Hello,
Could you guys recommend some good places to spot around FNC (Madeira) that are accessible by public transit/foot? The photog. mentions a good spot in this pic.

How easy is it to get there? Are there any other popular spots (like wherever this picture was taken from?)

Also, is the observation deck still open, and if it is, is it past security or open to everyone?

Thanks,
Jon

Though I have never been there. Seems like there is a observation deck on the terminal, also.

It does go the entire length of the terminal, one side is landside one is airside.

I visited Madeira a couple of years ago when I wasn't that interested in avation photograpy, but I think it's a spectacular airport and I'd like to go back. I'm not sure about accomodation nearby or public transport to the spots, but this bilingual website seems to have some useful information:

And the remark with this photo mentions the inauguration of the 'AMA spotting place', whatever that may be.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the help!

Very nice photos Sandro. You don't remember how to get to the cockpit-frame, do you? It looks like a good place for some landside shots.

Hi.

That's correct and it is free. Light is good in the morning and it is easy to buy some snacks for lunch.
To get to the other side, it can be easily (hmmm...well...it's uphill and the climb is quite considerable) done. I would say some 20-30 minutes walking from the Terminal building and from there it's good in the afternoon. The last time I went there there was still a restaurant open, but it seems that it was due to shut down, so I can't help you on that point.
End of the year is normally a nice time to catch those special charters for the new year celebrations.
If you need any extra help, then email me.
Have fun

Madeira is excellent. If you get bored with the amazing airport and especially the runway you can always visit the rest of the island or rent a car and try out those tight and twisty local up and down roads. Highly recommended Big grin

Well, maybe not rent a car, but I think I'll take a tour of the island -- if the bus drivers there are anything like those in PV Mexico . . .  biggrin

I vividly remember my elderly driver in Madeira turning his taxi around on a narrow parking lot in the mountains - in one 180 deg turn. Afther the manoeuvre there were only a few inches between the tires and the edge of the ravine  Smile
