Best Telephoto Zoom Lens For Spotting

Fri Dec 19, 2008 8:41 pm

I currently have a Canon 450D with 55-250mm IS telephoto lens. Is this sufficient for spotting planes (mostly in SXM) or do i need to buy a more powerful lens? If so please recommend some lenses that won't cost me an arm and a leg....  Smile thanks

At SXM I'd say the 55mm is a lot, I would say some wide angle glass would be nice.

Perhaps the Canon 18-55 IS is a cheap option.

There is the EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6L USM lens - a very big super-zoom. Expensive as well.

Does anyone here actually use it - or has used it? I imagine it's probably a lot like the Sigma 50-500mm superzoom in terms of handling and operation.

Don't people shoot with 15-18mm in SXM?

if its SXM then i'd say Canon EF-S 10-22mm would be the best thing to have on a Canon camera.
About the 55-250, i have it & its a really good lens.

My most used lenses at SXM are the 24-105F4L and 10-22. I've used my 70-200 on occassion for some approach shots but not often.
100-400 can actually be quite useful for departures as the aircraft climb out and make the right hand turn.

At SXM, I have only needed two lenses:

Canon 10-22mm (beach)
Canon 24-105mm IS (ground)

The 10-22 is a fun lens to own (not just for Maho). The only problem is, with a 1.6x crop factor, you lose a lot of the benefits of owning this lens. Anyone who owns a 5D/DII or 1-series body knows what I mean, but, it's the best you can do without going fisheye.

If you cannot afford the price of the Canon lens, the Sigma 10-20 is a very good lens as well, it just suffers a little more CA than the Canon counterpart.

I would like to see you fit that 10-22 on a 5D or 1D...
