Oshkosh And Spotting

Hi.


i am considering going oshkosh next summer and would like to know what the spottting oppurtunitys are there.

Just spotting during the summer, or you thinking about going for Airventure? Big difference between the two!

I think the question would be... where is there not a spotting opportunity at Airventure?

theres is another question....do you want to shoot the aircraft landing on the runways or do you want to shoot the aircraft on display?? i have answers for both

I'm probably going as well. I guess the static aircraft aren't that hard, but how about the runways? What's the minimum mm I should have?

Any other tips are of course welcome.

There are some 10k+ planes that come in during the week, and nearly every one of them can be walked right up to and photographed as much as you like. The air show grounds are not separated from operations, so you have plenty of opportunities to photograph planes taxiing in and out.

There are a few photographer stands for the show open to the public, but these are usually packed. The flightline for the show is length of the entire runway, so good spots are relatively easy to come by. There's no fence or barrier or to block your view, so you can just take a seat in the grass right up on the line and shoot the entire 3-hour show... And then for an hour or two after, there's a mass of planes coming and going, so we usually sit out and enjoy that - btw, air operations at Oshkosh are unlike anywhere else in the world.

Oh, and I recommend watching this video... really gives you an idea of what Airventure is all about.

Just to give you a general sense... for the larger birds (like the 747 or C-5, if either of them come again), they're in the frame side-on at about 40mm, maybe even less. You're definitely right up close to the action.

But the majority of planes at OSH are smaller. Military jets and warbirds need about 300mm to fill the frame side-on, and smaller props/homebuilts need about 400mm to fill the frame side-on.

I use a 100-400, and it lets me get just about everything. But I definitely wouldn't mind a 500 or 600mm prime for those aerobatic routines  Smile

Oshkosh is very good for photography. Most of the tips have been presented in the replies above and that's all true.

It is hard to say which day is best to come. They have the main attractions spread out over all the days just to get people to come to all of them!  Smile The closing weekend (Fri/Sat.) usually has the biggest air show with a large warbird demo. Sunday - closing day - after 5pm almost all the planes on display will line up to depart and you can shoot them all, in good light.

Monday - opening day - features a rock concert.

This year, the weekend prior to Oshkosh there is an air show on the lake front in Milwaukee about 2 hours south by car. The USAF T-Birds are scheduled there. Who knows? Maybe one of the T-Birds will show up on opening day at Oshkosh.

The weather is usually hot so be prepared, except this past year it was nice and comfortable. Also you will expect to do a lot of walking so again, be prepared. The runway is what, like 10,000 feet and there are planes to see all the way parallel to it so a rough guess is you'll probably walk 2 miles - in the heat with your camera gear. There might be rain, but I have gone to Oshkosh now 4 years in a row and there has never been a rain-out. If we get a storm just take shelter and wait. And there are plenty of places to take shelter.

I have posted many photos from 2008 Oshkosh but I have many, many more to upload. I had put those aside in order to work other photos the past few months! In January I will be uploading a LOT from Oshkosh.  Smile

In a country where people photographing airplanes are regarded with suspicion, Airventure is a welcome relief. At Oshkosh, you are expected to take pictures of airplanes and owners are proud to have photos taken of their birds. I shoot there mostly with a 17-85 lens, as you can walk right up to aircraft, instead of having to shoot over or through fences. The only slight downside is the crowds make clear shots difficult at times.

Probably the biggest challenge is making sure no people/cones/tents/flags are blocking any part of the aircraft. Your photo could be rejected even if a tiny corner of a tire is blocked.

Indeed. I like either showing up super early, or sticking around after the show, when the crowds thin out.

I don't know which website you are looking at but I got my info from fencecheck, and the Milwaukee Air Expo is scheduled for 7/25 - 7/26 2009, and the Thunderbirds have that in their schedule as well. Also scheduled are Lima Lima, Firebirds, and Golden Knights.

Of course they could cancel out - that has happened before even after the T-Birds or Blue angels were scheduled.
