Spotting At Fresno Air Terminal Any Help?

Mon Jan 05, 2009 4:31 pm

Hello All,

I just got a brand new lens for Christmas and I live very close to Fresno Air Terminal (KFAT/FAT), and I was wondering if any of you have any good spotting places close to the runway. Thanks!

I live next to Castle AFB, but I am also planning on taking a trip to KFAT in the future.

All of it is intact, just a few taxiways are closed haha. The museum has a very large selection of rare aircraft, including a B-52 and a KC-135. It is also still open to the public for GA flights. I also see C-17s and C-5s periodically doing training flights.  Wink

really??? I thought that they closed the base to all military ops. Well, I guess thats a good place to train because that runway is 13,000x300.  Smile As for the museum I have been there probably my fav aircraft in that collection is their F-4 Phantom. According to their website, it is only one of 6 Phantoms preserved in the world. Also, fyi, their working on a F-15 for their collection.  Smile

If you ask me, living in Fresno, when I went to Atwater, and saw those 100 foot tall hangars and what look to me like pretty good shape fuel trucks sitting around rotting it kind of made me sad. Why would a perfectly good base be wasted?? From what I heard, the government could not keep up the base, so they moved the entire squadron away, locked up the hangers and threw the fuel trucks in a fenced area. Please correct me if I am wrong.  Smile

Clinton threw away bases when he became President, since he wanted to weaken our military to reduce spending. I say he is an idiot.

BTW, yeah, it's especially saddening to have to pass by the base almost every day.

well, thats too bad  Sad I really wish they could at least have like an airshow there. Line up some B-52's and all of the other aircraft that they had there.

And another question. Was the ICAO Airport Code still KMER when the base was operational??
