Plane Spotting South Africa Johannesburg.

Thu Jan 15, 2009 9:53 pm

Okay this is to all the plane spotters in johannesburg.
I need some help as to where the best place is to plane spot at O.R tambo as i dont have a really big lens on my camera.
I was wondering if any of you are going this saturday or Sunday and could perhaps supply me with directions as to how i can get to the best plane spot areas.

All help is appreciated.

Thank you in advance
Mike Cyrus.

I'm interested in this thread, as I'm heading to South Africa in May and was going to create it eventually, so if I can get the info now, it'll prevent a duplicate thread.  Smile

Hi there whappeh this is some advice a mate on another forum gave me, he actually works at the airport anyways i hope this helps.
Ill be doing this trip tomoz taking his directions and if ya want i can report back and tell ya wat the best options are.

Off the R21 Northbound, take the new Atlas rd. offramp. This will then bring you to a trafficlight. Then turn right at the lights (towards ORTIA). You will see security in front of you. Just tell them you need to drop something off at Fedair, and you will be in. There might be cops as well with sniffer dogs (just in case). If no good spots go out and drive the road running next to the airport. You will see a good couple of parks etc. where I always see guys taking photo's.

Please do report back if its not much of an issue. I'd love to hear good advice about it, as its my first trip to Africa and I'm excited to do photography there.

I also heard that the airport has a viewing terrace, is this true?
