Manchester For Light Trails

First hello, first post on here.

Inspired by a shot I saw (I think from this 'ere site) I have wanted to get some plane light trail shots for ages. Manchester Airport is the closest for me, and just wondered if anyone had managed to get any of this sort of shot from there, and if so where did you find to be a good spot? (if that isn't being too cheeky).

Tempted to head over there tomorrow evening and see if I can even find a spot that might give me the shot, with this sort of photo I am thinking closeness to the runway wont be the prime position, but somewhere to get maybe a runway and the approach in would work.

So, yeah, any help anyone could offer would be much appreciated  Smile

Given the weather forecast is gusts to 80mph tonight across the whole western side of the country, I'd stay at home.

For shots like these at MAN your best hopes are probably at the Ringway road end of the airport which is right next to the approach lights.

showing the plane landing you may struggle because MAN isn't flat and there aren't that many places giving a suitable viewpoint. I'd say you'd need aircraft landing on 05R and to be on the south side looking along the runway. And it probably helps if the plane does something interesting in the sky.

You may be able to stand on the mounds opposite the airport pub for 23L and look North East, but you won't get them landing. May be OK for aircraft departing on 05L though.

Do you have a remote release for your camera? The maximum setting of say 30 seconds may not be long enough, especially for the 3rd photo above.

The 2nd photo above is with a 2nd curtain flash, i.e. the flash goes off at the end of the exposure, so check camera capabilities if you want to use flash as well.

Get a feel for how far a plane needs to be for you to start the exposure. Start too soon and the plane may still be too far away when the exposure is over.

wow thanks for such a full reply  Smile To be honest I had thought about doing this before I checked the weather which wasn't wise, as you have said gales could be fun :| to be honest that makes me more tempted to go to see what funky effects it will have on the light trails, but there now seems to be suggestions of rain in with the wind, which has put me off slightly. It is definitely on the cards for some time soon though I think  Wink

I have a cable release and was thinking about using flash, just wasn't sure how wise it was firing a flash near a runway to be honest.

As long as it's under the plane, then I can't see any problems. With the distance you're likely to be from the plane, any flash is unlikely to affect the pilots. You might need quite a powerful flash, though.
