Nellis AFB Spotting

Wed Feb 04, 2009 5:25 am

I am very interested in going out to Nellis for the Red Flag at the end of February/beginning of March. Since there will be no media days for this exercise I was wondering if anyone can tell me of possible locations to spot from the outside of the base. I see some interesting aircraft will take part like VC-10s and F-111s and I really want to catch these. I have a Canon 100-400mm lens. Any advice?

I was interested in this as well, but after seeing some of the spots for spotting and how distant they are I'm inclined to cancel my roadtrip there

Doing Nellis from the outside has to rate as one of the most frustrating aviation photography experiences I've had.

Great if stuff breaks right, desperate if it breaks left, and you won't know who's going to do what till you see them arriving in the overhead.
Cheers,

It can be a real hike. I did four days of photography there back in August 08. Three days I used the bus, the fourth, I rented a car. Walking did enable me to meet some friendly photographers that gave me a lift back to the bus stop near the Nellis main gate from the race track.

That is a cool link.
I never knew that the photographer on that site is only a 13 year old kid!
Wow, I remember when I was 13 I was learning to use film on my old beater camera..
For a youngster, he has some wonderful photos of jet fighters and shoots with an expensive gear.

This is useful for me as well as I am thinking about visiting Las Vegas and Nellis in March just in time for the final sorties of Red Flag before breaking off until summer..

Is the runway repavement at McCarran done yet?

There is a Super 8 across the street from the base.

Most people stay in the Craig/L.Vegas Blvd area and there are several motels around there. The Super8 there is very popular and has about a $50 a nite rate.

You can get hotels in downtown Vegas for way less...

Just depends on if your renting a car or plan on walking a lot!!

Wow thanks for the quick replies. I thought downtown hotels are more expensive. I can't rent a car because you must be 25 to rent a car and I'm only 21. Walking is fine actually, it seems that the super 8 motel is about a mile or mile and a half walking distance to cheyenne. I assume there is nothing closer than that super 8?

Also, does anybody know if the F-111s and VC-10s will be there all three weeks of this red flag?

Lets see if this link works for you..(listing of all area motels)

http://maps.yahoo.com/map?q1=2112%2B...%2520Blvd%2520Las%2520Vegas%2520NV

Listing of local Hotels!!

http://maps.yahoo.com/map?q1=2112%2B...%2520Blvd%2520Las%2520Vegas%2520NV

If you did stay downtown..I'm finding rooms from $18-23 on Hotels.com.(mid-week)
Then you can catch buses that will take you up to the Cheyenne area and you can walk the last mile or two..(Max or the 113)

It would save you $30 a night and that would but you a nice dinner after a hard day chasing jets!! *grin*

Thanks a lot Dbudd! Looks like I'll be going. I am just figuring out final dates now. Do you know anything regarding the F-111s and what days they will be there?
