Looking For New Screeners

Wed Feb 11, 2009 3:44 pm

Hi All

We are currently looking for new screeners. We have recently hired 2 people from the last round of applications that ended in august last year. We are looking for new candidates who would join us in the next few months.

Fortunately some of the recent bugs have been dealt with and we are working with DM to improve the screening process even more.

We are looking for long term commitment. Screening will take about 30-45 minutes of your day on average (minimum). Most screeners of course spend much more time Wink

If anyone is interested please send an email to headscreeners@airliners.net with the subject line reading: Screener Application

Anyone can apply, but we are looking for experienced photographers and uploaders. The email should contain the following

real name
username
age
link to your photos
short description of your experience in photography
a short motivation on why we should choose you

Deadline for applications is march 31st.

Looking forward to some responses, and please post any questions you may have here.

On behalf of the screening team
Tim

So is the intention in general to speed up the screening, somebody wants to depart or other ?

Yeah, had a feeling. It makes sense though. It seems like theres just such a large margin for error and everyone sees things differently. I know myself, and plenty other, have wonderfully sharp images, yet it comes back saying that its not, which to me is a joke. But oh well...

Thousands of uploads are not necessary. What we're looking for is people who produce high quality material, not necessarily high volume, and who have a few years experience with the site.

What's important is the ability to accurately critique images. Some screeners in the past have been picked up because of their excellent contributions to the forum helping people with rejections etc.

No offense but if you are getting rejections you cannot understand you probably are not ready to be a screener yet.

Tim - I recall that when this process happened a couple of years ago you said that the headscreeners would be keeping a record of all those who applied at the time and would be using that as a pool for future applications.

Was that idea scrapped?

Alright. I'm not worried about it and I dont want to get into it, but seeing some of the reasons that they reject pictures and (in my case) I have noooo idea where they come up with some of the excuse. But it is what it is...I (and many others) will just keep trying to please them lol

From the tone of the original post it sounds like anyone who wasn't chosen last summer is out and they want new people to apply...... is this true?

No, those who applied last year can apply again, in fact please do if you still want the position. We would just like a bigger pool to choose from.

We often see candidates who we feel need just a little more time, or a nudge in the right direction before they could make good screeners.

I was wondering if theres politics involved in choosing pictures, actually. Like they will obviously pick more pictures, more often from people who have more time in or more pictures accepted. Correct?

You know I didn't mean governmental politics right? Like NIKV said in reply 14, the way he worded it, it seems as if by what I've said, they'd hold that against me when they see me upload a picture, just because of that they'll find a reason to reject it even if it should at least get past phase 1 of screening and get looked at a second time?

The screeners arent just going to reject images because they personally might not like this person uploading the images cause they whinge about the screening process being too hard or whinging about the site in general or it could be a personal issue between photographer and screener.

If the photo has flaws it should rightfully be rejected and fixed up if possible or one for personal collection,if you keep getting rejected than keep trying to improve your images or improve your post process....just because your images are rejected you dont need to take it personally that screeners might not like you and dont want your images here.

I think this might have been mentioned in the past, but has any more thought been put into the idea of having pre-screeners that could weed out the pictures that have absolutely no chance of being accepted?

No politics are involved. Hell, I'm a crew member and my acceptance ratio is right around 30%...if they were to use politics as a deciding factor, don't you think it'd be higher?

Tim, (as you're most likely to reply to this), would it be fair to say it's easier to spot flaws in others work, as opposed to your own? With your own I'm not saying you think you're perfect, but I get rejections and after (most of the time) reading the reason for rejection I tend to agree with it. Having the chance to see someone else's image, is it easier to pick out, say a contrast or soft, cause of rejection. (I'm guessing it is).
Also, is screening now a paid "job", or is it still volunteer work? I'll go with the latter as I haven't read otherwise.
Non of this has anything to do with me applying, as sadly I wouldn't be able to spend the necessary time doing so, plus I probably wouldn't like it either....
Cheers

Spence,

As an old Screener I can tell you it is much easier to find fault with others work than your own. As a Screener your kind of looking for a problem with the image, so you are more alert to any flaws with it. It becomes second nature when you have been doing it for a while and the obvious flaw shows up very quickly. but not every image is that easy!

Cheers

Yes I would say so, that's why we cannot screen our own images Smile I get rejections too and most of the time I also rework and see I could have done better in the first place.

This is true, but after screening for a while I can tell you who took a picture, based on location and quality, without even looking at the name. We all have our own style, and it shows after a while.

Look, mate, you basically asked a rhetorical question, what kind of reply did you expect? Don't you think it wouldn't be really ethical/appropriate for the head screeners to discuss here who was interested, who has applied, who have been approached and who didn't make it?

Yes, it would be nice to have Paul as a screener, but judging by your post, you don't seem to even know yourself whether he has applied or not.

Despite the loosing battles this guy is fighting everywhere else in this thread, I have to agree in part with this... Yes, I am new here too. I am not new to photography, or photo processing and graphic design. My second photo added to the database was a photographers choice on the home page.

Since then I've had a few more shots accepted and a fair share of rejections that i can live... however a couple of them just leave me wondering and scratching my head.

So I'm curious... are all screeners using calibrated monitors set at the same resolution with an airliners.net icc color profile?

Correct me if I'm wrong and don't mistake this for rock throwing, but I'm guessing the answer is no?

If you have problems with your rejected images and dont understand why than post the images on here(start your own thread) and ask for advice/help.

Screeners are human and i assume calibrate their monitors to be as close as possible to the standard but what one screener might see another might not see and thats what can happen when they do a great job of screening serval hundred images a day.

Im sure all regular uploaders have experienced the fixing up of a rejection image like contrast or softness and re upload and than getting image knocked back for totally different reason like level etc,Its part of the fun of uploading i guess and we always dont agree with screeners decision but such is life.

and we always dont agree with screeners decision

Hi Mark - is it that we 'always don't agree' with screeners' decisions or that we 'don't always agree'?  biggrin .

what does Paul Markman (Psych) have to do to get the nod

It was kind of Alan to think of me in this context, and say as much. I am aware that I - like everyone else - would have to apply again before being considered for such a position.

For me a good screener needs various attributes and characteristics, one of which I would agree is a proven track record of support for fellow photographers in this Forum. Screeners also need to have demonstrated their own photographic abilities behind the camera lens and also technical abilities in front of their computer screens, using their editing software. Add to that a comprehensive understanding of how the site uses its criteria; a broad knowledge of aviation; (I believe) the ability to work as part of a team and - very importantly, as Tim mentioned at the outset - time to invest in the process on a regular basis.

It is quite a tall order, and I hope the guys find the right people for the job who will inspire confidence in the membership.

All the best.

Paul

So I'm curious... are all screeners using calibrated monitors set at the same resolution with an airliners.net icc color profile?

Correct me if I'm wrong and don't mistake this for rock throwing, but I'm guessing the answer is no?

Less I am mistaken they all got really nice Dell monitors that were calibrated properly.

If you have problems with your rejected images and dont understand why than post the images on here(start your own thread) and ask for advice/help.
