Circuit City Liquidation - Good Deals On Gear

Mon Feb 16, 2009 11:49 pm

So I was in a Circuit City in a neighboring town, and I ran across two D700s and about 10 70-200 VR lenses, all for 30% off. The D700s were $2100, and those lenses were around $170, I think.

According to a first-hand account of Circuit City's liquidation procedures I saw on Gizmodo, the discount will continue to increase until the store closes for good. And a salesperson I spoke with also predicted heavier discounts in the coming weeks.

I just wanted to point this out to the aviation photographers in here, new and experienced alike. This could be a good opportunity to upgrade.

I bought my A200 about a month ago in Daytona, I got a good deal, the sales lady was very helpful and did not have a "loosing my job" attitude, she said further discounts were likely!

Wait...70-200mm VR lenses for $170. I might swing by Circuit tomorrow at lunchtime then...

I'm gonna have to chalk that one up to a typo, there's no way they can be selling that lens for 170 bucks. I'm going to assume he meant 1700.

Just be careful......if something goes bad with the stuff you by from Circuit City or if it doesn't work out of the box, you won't be able to return it.

Also, their "discounts" are based off the full MSRP price. You could probably get better deals (and still be able to return stuff) at Best Buy or other camera stores.

You're right, it was a typo. The lenses I saw were the 55-200VR models....not the 70-200. Sorry about that.

I was at the local CC in Charlotte last week and saw the Canon 40D w/35-80mm for $909. They also had a couple of Nikon's but couldn't get near them.

As mentioned above with CC's no return policy, buyer beware. As I was browsing, I watched this guy handling a Canon XSi. He went to put the camera back in the holder, with the 'peg' security device and missed the whole. I just cringed when I watched the SLR drop and then his subsequent fumbling of it gave a few more bangs. All I could think of was the poor person that ends up getting that floor model at a great price, but already having taken a beating internally.

Keep in mind though that manufacturer warranties still apply.

35-80?? I thought it came with the 28-135mm IS as a kit lens for it? That sells for over $1100 on bhphoto.

You're right, it was 28-135mm. For some reason I was thinking of the lens that came with my Canon film SLR, which was 35-80. There are definitely some good deals to be had at CC, if they're not picked through. I saw one or two HD video records priced under $200. I already have one so I didn't look at the make/model.

I would not buy display models of almost anything with moving parts, especially not lenses. I picked up the last Nikon 70-300 VR I could find in a box at any CC in town two weeks ago. The price was really good ($470) especially considering Nikon just raised all their dealer prices (Adorama is now selling it for $530).

But after trying two stores and not finding a copy in-the box, I took a closer look at one of the display models. The rubber grip material on the zoom ring was held on by a zip tie, the aperture lever was severely sticky, and both elements were coated by thousands of fingerprints and probably a year's worth of dust.

This condition looked typical of lenses on display.

That said, they had a lot of 55-200's in stock in boxes, and they have a policy against letting customers open camera boxes, so they should be untouched. Anybody looking for an entry-level telephoto should be able to get a great deal at CC.

Also, you probably all know to comparison shop briefly before buying from a liquidating company. Everything is marked up to full MSRP, and discounts taken from that point. It's pretty common for 20% off in liquidation to be equal to the regular price at discount retailers.

As I've been shopping over the past couple of weeks, I've been nice to the sales associates, and they've bent the rules so I could have a peek inside. The policy is in place, but the nice thing is, you can still probably inspect the camera/lens before buying.

The guy I spoke with today suggested checking back in 3-4 days. He suspects the discount will increase from the current 30% off to 40% or 50% off by then.

In MSN and MKE, they say March 20th is the last day.

I found a handful of Nikkor 180mm f/2.8d ED-IF lenses at one location. Can someone tell me a little about this lens? My gut feeling is that despite being fast, it's a little too long for shooting on the ramp, and that because it's a fixed length (I think?), it would make shooting aircraft in flight rather difficult.
