Best Hotel For In-room JFK/LGA Spotting?

Tue Feb 17, 2009 4:07 pm

A friend is getting married in Brooklyn soon. Can anyone recommend a good hotel where I could take runway photos of JFK or LGA from my room?

If it would affect your answer, I have lenses from 55-200mm. I like closeups, but I also like long-exposure night pics that show an a/c's lights throughout a climb or approach.

Thanks!

I'm sure that someone will have more recent experiences than me, but I always used to like to stay at the hotels on Ditmars Blvd. for watching the activites at LGA. There are several - the one that I used to stay at appears now on Google Earth as the Wyndam-Garden Hotel. It's been at least 15 years since I stayed there and it was before I had any decent kind of camera equipment but I always used to ask for a room facing the airport as high up as possible and I could switch on my scanner and enjoy the view.

It would seem to be a bit too far away for pictures with the equipment you have, but it would be an easy walk to Plainview Park where your lens would be plenty long.

Have a nice trip!

Chase,

To my knowledge there are no hotels that offer a view of the runway action at JFK. It's not at all like LHR and the Marriott. There are no hotels in the inner circle of the airport, only on the perimeter, and they don't have views of the runways. The Ramada is right at the airport entrance off of the Van Wyck Expressway, but the planes go directly overhead inbound to 13L.

To get photos at JFK you really need to be off property at locations around the airport. Unfortunately if you don't have a car these locations are hard to reach. You can check my site for many of these locations ... the address is ...

Good luck.

I ran into a German photographer at Inwood Park a couple of months ago who was staying at the Five Towns Inn on Rockaway Blvd near JFK:

From the outside this place looks a bit dodgy but he said the rooms were fine. He said you could see some of the 31R action from the room, but in-room photography is probably not an option. More importantly, however, if you don't have a car you should be able to walk up to the Firestone lot, a popular photography location for 31R arrivals at JFK. If the 22L approach is in use as it often is, you'll have more difficulty, as the common photography spots for that runway are several miles away. And as Art noted, for 13L the Ramada is your best best, but you'll need to venture out a bit for decent photos.

I've used Art's spotting web site frequently and recommend it (in fact used it this morning to get Tampa info - thanks, Art!).

I went to the Ramada Plaza during my last JFK trip. They were using 13L when I arrived but right after I checked in they switched to 22R.
