Any Spotting In SFO Coming Up?

Mon Feb 23, 2009 10:58 pm

Hello everyone, this is my first post ever on airliners.net though I have been on the site for more than 2 years now. I was wondering if any of you are going to be photographing aircrafts at SFO from the Bayshore park near SFO Mariott in the coming few days / weeks. I would be more than happy to join you guys as I have never been there. I have a 18-55mm lens which is useless for this, I know. Thus, I will be renting atleast a 500mm. So please reply, if your are going to be there.

Thanks.

It's not exactly the best time of the year for spotting at SFO, it's the rainy season here in California and the weather has been awful the last two weeks, you may want to reschedule.

I disagree with post #2.. bad weather actually makes great images, and this time of year the heat distortion isn't as bad as summertime.

Unfortunately SFO is a terrible airport for photography. Even with 500 the shots are too distant, and good luck getting anything on a.net. You might want to check out San Jose Airport, good spotting there.

I agree. I might try that as well. The only thing is I want to shoot heavies and the only "so called" heavies that come to SJC are the DC10/MD11, 767.

....things that make you go hmmmm. 4957 shots and counting......

I know some local SFO shooters and all they use is the 100-400L IS lens. For a 777 or 747 you don't need the full 400 as far as I remember.
My last visit to SFO is dated back to Dec 2004.

Nikon D100, plus 400f2.8

I found San Bruno Caltrain station to be good for getting shots of 28 departures if you have at least 300mm available

I think there was a mixed response regarding using the open view point beside the elevators at the Terminal 2 AirTrain station. But on my visit, an airport official (remember this is land side) saw me with the camera and took the time to show me the best location

Quite funny actually... those are very nice shots. I've submitted very similar ones in sunset and they all got tossed for "color" (whatever the h*ll that means these days), with 50D and 100-400L IS.

Like you said, things that make you go hmmmm....

Hey all,

I'v been wanting to ask this on a SFO spotting thread for a long time. If you take a boat onto the San Fransisco Bay, how close can you get to the 28 L/R runways and shoot aircraft coming in?? Or will the Coast Guard get you first??  Wink

Hello,

I am a former resident of the Bay Area (since moved to SoCal) and there is a group dedicated to SFO spotters. The website is http://groups.google.com/group/sfo-spotters?hl=en and its a pretty good site run by real nice people who will gladly set up a spotting time.

As for sites around or near SFO, I like the fishing pier near Coyote Point Park as well as Coyote Point Park. This particular location is about 1.5--2 miles from runway 28L/R so you can get nice shots of every airline and airliner coming into SFO.

Also about the caltrain station place, just down the road is "Lions Park" where there is a parking lot near the baseball field where you can get even better departure shots without risking the plane being in between power lines.

if you have any more questions or would like to see some samples of mine from these locations my e-mail is smoran383@gmail.com and I will gladly show you them!

Also, if the weather is bad, then there might be a chance of getting arrivals on the 10's which means they fly right over the TanForan shopping center in San Bruno which makes for unique shots!!
Good Luck!
