A Useful Tool For Spotting...(iPhone, IPod Touch)

Thu Mar 19, 2009 8:46 am

Hi all,

Just read about this in Moose Petersons Blog:

http://spiraldev.com/focalware/

might come in handy when you´re planning a spotting trip away from home, or even there.

This little program calculates the suns (and moons) position, including rise and set times anywhere in the world.
It runs on an iPod Touch, or an iPhone.

cheers,

Denis
That's it! You people have stood in my way long enough. I'm going to clown college!

Denis,

Thanks for that. A very useful tool indeed! It will join VisualDOF and links to flightaware as a reason why the iPhone is the spotter's best friend!

My iphone is the best thing that ever happened to me. You guys know you can listen to LiveATC.net through the iphone right? Use the App called Fstream.

Thats how I get the 28L and 28R departures without having to wait for the planes to pop out behind the buildings by surprise

Calisam:

I use a scanner in addition to my iPhone. i still have a 2G iPhone (slow EDGE connection) so streaming liveATC doesn't work very well!

Here you go: http://d.liveatc.net/ksfo_twr
Format: mp3
bitrate: 16

I believe for other airports you can just change the airport identity  Smile

That would go well with the application i'm starting to develop, a plane spotting app to show where the best places are for plane plane spotting. Only one problem.... I have no idea how to create an application, so it should be ready in a while! If anyone know what they're doing with application development let me know!

That application focalware looked like it was $9.99, I only do free Apps  Smile

One of my favorites is AeroWeather. It is free and pulls all the ASOS data for airports you enter. Even decodes the METAR reports.

To a lesser extent, AirportStatus does a decent job on airport Delay info. Another Free one.

I use my iPhone when I go spotting here in the UK. The internet is great for checking the airport arrival/departures info.
I also use wunderground on there to see what the weather is and the wind direction incase there is a runway change in the near future.

I didnt know the iPhone would play the live atc but luckily I have a scanner as my home airport NCL doesnt have enough traffic to warrent a link on liveATC.net
There's flying and then there's flying
